Recent FCDS Graduate Receives Special Recognition at the White House

As a U.S. Presidential Scholar, Charlotte Thomas ’17 was treated to exclusive recognition events in Washington, D.C. last week.

Thomas was named one of four Presidential Scholars in North Carolina and one of only 161 in the United States!

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program honors the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected for the honor based on superior academic achievement, essays, artistic excellence, school transcripts and evaluations, as well as leadership, a demonstrated commitment to high ideals, and community service.

At the White House, the group took a photo with First Lady Melania Trump in the East Room. Mrs. Trump talked to the group, wished them luck in their future endeavors, and tweeted out the photo.

The group was allowed to walk in through the front doors of the White House as well as tour a few of the rooms. It was a special honor because these rooms have been closed off to the public.

They also walked through the National Mall with their medals and were allowed to take photos with several monuments. The reflecting pool was being refilled at the time, so they were actually able to take photos inside the pool.

Additionally, they attended a concert in their honor at the Kennedy Center, in which the 2017 Presidential Scholars in the Arts performed.

Congrats again to Charlotte for this wonderful accomplishment and opportunity!
