Our parents truly appreciate the thoughtful hands-on care our nurses provide for our children – preschool to 12th grade – every day. We are fortunate to have two full-time registered pediatric nurse and part-time registered nurses at school from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. These healthcare professionals really get to know our children and provide continuous support, care, and education.

How Our Nurses Help Families

  • Deliver direct care to students for injuries and acute illness for all students and long-term management of students with special health care needs.
  • Provide assessment and treatment within the scope of professional nursing practice, communicate with parents, refer to physicians, and supervise prescribed nursing care.
  • Develop individualized health care plans for students with chronic conditions, and when appropriate, an emergency plan is developed to manage potential emergent events in the school setting (like diabetes or asthma). Ideally, this health plan is aligned with the management plan directed by the child’s pediatrician and regularly updated through close communication. The school nurse is responsible for management of this plan and communication about the plan to all appropriate school personnel.
  • Promote a healthy school environment by monitoring immunizations, ensure appropriate exclusion for infectious illnesses, and report communicable diseases as required by law.
  • Provide health information to individual students and groups of students through health education, science, and other classes.
  • Act as a liaison between school personnel, families, health care professionals, and the community.
"At FCDS, Nancy Hart and her Health Room team are extraordinary! Over the years, I have witnessed them provide exceptional care for students with acute health needs, ongoing health conditions, emotional issues, or a skinned elbow or knee.

No matter how large or small the need, students can always count on excellent medical treatment and compassion from the Health Room staff. The fact that students have full-time access to such outstanding health care providers is very comforting for parents!" - Karen, Parent

  • Location

The Health Room is located in the hallway connecting the Lower School and the Williams Library Discovery Center. It is staffed by a full-time registered nurse and a part-time registered nurse who are available from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. each school day.
  • Medications

Basic over-the-counter medications are available as needed according to the Magnus physician-authorized and parental permission forms. Prescription medications are administered only after a Physician Authorization form is completed by the parent and the physician. These forms are all available from the Magnus folder in the Resources area once you have logged into your Parent account in OnCampus
  • Records

It is critical that your child's health record is current at all times. Magnus Health collects health and medical information for FCDS including physicals, asthma action plans, consent to treat forms, and immunizations.  Login to your Parent account in OnCampus and click the Magnus button to update all health forms.

The school nurse then has access to this data, which is searchable and organized for easy reporting. From the Magnus Portal , the school nurse has visibility over student compliance and can track allergies and medications, catalog treatment notes, securely communicate with students, or their parents or guardians, and more. In an emergency, FCDS has state of the art tools through Magnus911 to deliver lifesaving information to immediate responders, hospitals or other points of care.
  • Health Education

Health promotion and disease prevention education are a large part of our wellness focus.
