FCDS Girls’ Varsity Swim Team Wins State Championship for the Second Straight Year

Congratulations to the Fury girls’ varsity swim team for its back-to-back NCISAA state championship win and to the boys’ team for their runner-up finish! It is the first time in school history when both the girls’ and boys’ teams have finished in the top two.

“To accomplish this in a year when we’ve had more obstacles and less pool time is a huge testament to these swimmers,” said Head Coach Rachel Baker ’13, who leads the team with Co-Head Coach Sawyer Hubbard. “These swimmers stayed committed and took advantage of every opportunity. We were thankful just to have a season at all, so this was better than we could have hoped for!

The girls won their meet with 368 points, beating out Cape Fear Academy with 302 and third-place finisher The Asheville School with 261.5 points.

The boys, who made huge progress over last year, missed the win by 70 points. The Asheville School took state honors with 398 points, FCDS scored 328, and Asheville Christian came in third with 254 points.

FCDS had eight All-State athletes: Carstyn Klosterman, Lexie Breitling, Saanvi Pawa, Eva Hollar, James Snyder, Steven Insixiengmay, Nathan Jao, and Chris Bannigan.

The school broke three state records: Nathan Jo in the 50 free and the 100 free, and Steven Insixiengmay in the 100 breast. The boys broke five school records (see below).
