Students Help Local Community During Middle School Day of Service

Each grade had been spending time in homerooms researching needs in the community and the specific charities they helped. Here’s how they spent last Friday making a difference in their community:

The fifth graders heard from Lia Erickson with Waughtown Pediatrics who spoke to them about setting up a clinic and serving a large Hispanic population. She shared with them that zip code is actually the biggest influencer of your health and that people living in the Waughtown did not have access to medical care for their children so they often ended up going to the emergency room. The students wrote books in Spanish for the Waughtown Pediatrics waiting room.

Sixth graders planted flowers all around the Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, washed cars and scrubbed carts at Senior Services, and made placemats for Meals on Wheels.

The seventh grade students sorted food at Second Harvest Food Bank and then prepared food bags for the Forsyth Backpack Program and learned about food insecurity in our community. All of the supplies for the 800 backpacks came from a grant from the Winston-Salem Foundation secured by FCDS Juniors Yasmin Horner and Sahar Sayess.

It was a busy and productive day! We are proud of these students for serving their community.
