FCDS Boys’ Varsity Swim Team Wins First State Championship in School History

Congratulations to the FCDS boys’ varsity swim team, which won the NCISAA State Championship for the first time in the history of the school.

“One of the best parts of swimming is that it is both an individual and team sport,” Coach Sawyer Hubbard said. “When you dive in for a race, it's just you, the water, the competition, and your time. But to score well as a team and to win the championship like we did this year, it took multiple good swims across all the events in the meet.”

The final race was tight, with the Furies beating Asheville School 310 to 296. One swimmer, Thad Austin, set two new individual records in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle and swam a leg of FCDS’s two winning relays. Eric Petruzzi, who also swam part of each winning relay, also took home a dominant win in the 100 breaststroke to give us first place in five out of 11 events.

“The team aspect of Forsyth swimming is what has propelled the program to a state title this year,” Coach Hubbard said. “The boys lift each other up in and outside of practice and the seniors especially seized this opportunity and scored big for us at the meet. Coaching this special group has been an honor of mine and seeing the personal improvement was extremely rewarding. It’s great to see the work pay off at the end of the season with a memory that will last a lifetime.”
