4 FCDS Upper School Students Compete in Statewide Math Contest

Kelly Chen, Mindy Li, Kevin Wang, and Gary Yu competed at the State Comprehensive Math Contest on April 26 at the North Carolina School of Science and Math (NCSSM). There were 136 participants, all of whom qualified for the state finals by finishing in the top eight percent of several regional sites across the state. It is the first time in recent years that so many of FCDS students have earned the right to compete at NCSSM.

Students took a 90-minute exam—no calculator allowed—comprised of 20 multiple choice questions and ten free response questions. The top 40 students received state recognition. Although these students did not receive honorable mention this year, both Kelly Chen and Mindy Li were only one question away from being in the top 40 competitors in the state.

The three seniors, Kelly, Mindy, and Kevin, have anchored FCDS math competition teams consistently during their time here. Collectively, they have competed in this event seven times over three years.

We are very proud of these students for their efforts at this competition and for all of their outstanding accomplishments.
