FCDS Junior Recognized for Alzheimer’s Disease Research

Congratulations to FCDS junior Ava Claire Scherer, whose group project “Gene Editing in Alzheimer’s Disease”, won the 2023 NC Catalyst Award at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Summer Ventures program.

This summer, Ava attended the NC School of Science and Mathematics Summer Ventures Program, which featured four weeks of intensive classroom and lab instruction. Ava and a team of students worked with Dr. Ying Wang at The Wang Lab studying biotechnology. Working with Dr. Wang, the students experimented with gene editing techniques and created a project that examined gene therapy for Alzheimer’s disease. Their work won the 2023 NC Catalyst Award at the conclusion of the program.

In recognition of this achievement, Ava’s group presented at the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium. Ava and her team will continue to collaborate with Dr. Wang as they seek to further their work.

Upper School Director Laura Clay said, "I am so impressed by Ava and her team's work, devotion, and continued research. What a superstar!"
