The Brotherhood is Back: FCDS Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse Wins State Championship

Congratulations to the FCDS boys’ varsity lacrosse team for winning the 2025 NCISAA Division II State Championship!

According to Head Coach Marc Winbush, the Brotherhood (an affectionate name for Fury Boys’ Lacrosse) knew it had a special team this season. “We had a seasoned eight-senior core, competent juniors, and talented sophomores, freshmen, and even eighth graders who could prove formidable at the state level,” Coach Winbush said. The one variable was the goalie position: FCDS had graduated two NCAA Division I alums after its 2024 season. “Enter freshman Jarmon Fonville, who stepped into the varsity goalie position literally under fire by hard, high-speed shots, playing against opponents with easily three to seven years more experience,” Coach Winbush said. “Because of Jarmon’s dedication to his work and team, he was one of the reasons the team was able to win the 2025 State Championship with a freshman goalie.”

The team as a whole was exceptional. “We had one of the most powerful offenses and defenses in the NCISAA Division II,” Coach Winbush said. “Our starting attack finished the season with over 200 points. The midfield finished with just under 100 points. The defense averaged holding most opponents under 9 goals, while the offense capitalized on scoring 104 total points over our collective opponents this season.”

Perhaps the most powerful thing was the team’s belief in itself and the camaraderie the players shared. In the off-season, they worked out on and off the field from fall through preseason, bonding at events such as Brotherhood Outings, when the team would meet to share a meal. “The guys worked hard together because they truly liked each other,” Coach Winbush said. “To witness them outside of school as a group was truly a pleasure. From eighth graders to seniors, they all seemed to have time for each other, which directly correlated to how they interacted with each other on the field of competition.”
