FCDS Announces Exciting Transformation of Middle School Learning Spaces This Summer

FCDS is excited to announce that it will modernize its middle school classrooms into innovative learning spaces this summer.

Over the past year, the school piloted seven concept classrooms, testing elements including flexible, adaptable furniture, portable technology, safety features (such as wall-mounted phones), paint, and new flooring. Students and teachers provided feedback on the spaces that informed the final design decisions.

“A lot of thought and process has gone into developing these classrooms. Moveable furniture, soothing color choices, dimmable lights. Everything is designed to fit and adapt to the students’ needs,” said Middle School math teacher Jasmine Vadgama, who pioneered one of the concept classrooms. “It is not only a space of learning but a collaborative space where students exchange ideas. They have voice and choice in how they are going to take ownership of their learning.”

The project will begin during Maymester when students are no longer using their classrooms and will be completed before the first day of school. Families interested in seeing the finished classrooms are invited to tour at Back to School Night on September 11.

“I can’t wait to see our students explore these new spaces,” said Director of Middle School Robin Snow. “The concept classrooms have already helped students focus and inspired more collaboration, so I’m excited to see the positive impact this will have across our division!”

This transformative initiative is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Barrineau family, whose support exemplifies the power of partnership in shaping the future of FCDS. The school plans to expand this vision into Lower School and Upper School classrooms in the future, pending additional funding.
