FCDS Announces Students with National Merit and AP Scholar Distinctions
National Merit
The National Merit® Scholarship Program honors “students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.”
Three FCDS seniors, Andrew Claybrook, Victoria Huggins and Alexander Zades have been named Semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit® Scholarship Program. Approximately 1.5 million high school juniors entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which screened the program entrants based on their test scores. The number of semifinalists represents less than one percent of high school seniors in the United States. To become a finalist, students complete an extensive scholarship application that discusses their academic record, extracurricular activities, leadership skills and other honors they have received. NMSQT finalists will be named in the spring of 2018.
Five seniors Christopher Atala, William Boyles, Gwyneth Howerton, Alexandra Huggins, and Jiaming (Kevin) Wang were named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit® Scholarship Program. They placed among the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students in the competition.
AP Scholar Awards
FCDS students from the Classes of 2017 and 2018 have also been recognized by College Board for their college-level achievement on Advanced Placement (AP) examinations taken last spring.
Benjamin Burnett ’17, Banks Pickett ’17, and Charlotte Thomas ’17 received the honor of National AP Scholar, granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

AP Scholar with Honor is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
