    Bio
     
    Nathan, who attended FCDS through the end of his sophomore year, received a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
     
    He joined the FCDS faculty in 2005, teaching history, coaching, and serving as dean of students from 2005-2009 and as assistant director of the Upper School from 2009-2011.
     
    In 2011, Nathan left FCDS to help launch the “better for you” beverage company, Grins, where he served as Director of Fun and Managing Partner. In this role, Nathan managed daily operations including production, sales and marketing, and logistics. From 2011 to 2014, he also served as Head of New Business Development at Yadkin Valley Foods, where he helped promote growth for the Junior Johnson brands.
     
    Nathan has served in many roles at FCDS including Middle School history teacher, Director of Entrepreneurship, Director of Admission, and Director of Upper School. 
     
    Nathan and his wife Kaitlin have two children, Reese ’29 and Bo '32.

    A native of Mississippi, Bunny graduated from the University of Mississippi with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and earned her master’s degree in education at Wake Forest University. After a 17-year break to stay home with her children, Bunny returned to teaching at FCDS. From 1997-2001, she taught geometry, precalculus, and AP calculus at Forsyth and served as math department chair for one year. She even taught Mr. Manna and Mrs. Metzler when they were ninth graders. In recent years she has been a volunteer math tutor at Wiley Middle School. Bunny is married to Peter and they have three children: Jack, Emily, and Charlotte.

    Orchestra Director
    Bio
     
    Barbara earned her bachelor’s degree in music education K-12 from Rowan University. A veteran music teacher who has been an orchestra director since 1997, she has worked for the past 22 years with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools at Clemmons Middle School and West Forsyth High School.

    During her career, Barbara has successfully prepared her students for All-Country, Western Region, and All-State Orchestra. She was nominated for Teacher of the Year at Clemmons Middle School for several years, and was named the WS/FCS Orchestra Teacher of the Year in 2013. Barbara has long mentored first-year music and arts teachers as a STAY Coach, and she served as the WS/FCS Orchestra Chairperson.

    Dr. Bert Ellison is originally from western North Carolina. He did his undergraduate work at UNC-Chapel Hill and then earned a master’s degree in divinity from Duke University and a Ph.D. in sociology from the City, Culture, and Community program at Tulane University, where he studied the formation of a sense of belonging among adolescents in educational settings.
     
    Dr. Ellison is passionate about co-creating systems of belonging. For more than15 years, he has had the opportunity to do this work in a variety of roles and settings such as summer camps, higher education, technology consulting, and being a stay-at-home dad. He and his wife live in Winston-Salem and have two sons.

    Dr. Nathan Faulkner earned a bachelor’s degree in biological anthropology from Duke University, a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Winston-Salem State University, a master’s degree in mathematics from Wake Forest University, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of South Carolina. With more than 6 years of teaching experience, Nathan has taught and tutored extensively at the college level at the University of South Carolina, Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, and most recently, as a visiting assistant professor at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, N.C., where he taught Elementary Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Math for Liberal Arts, and Linear Algebra. He also has experience teaching College Algebra, Calculus, and Finite Mathematics. Nathan and his wife Cari have three children: August, Martin, and Brian.

    Bio
     
    Born in Rochester, N.Y., Lauren moved to Winston-Salem when she was in second grade. She received her bachelor’s degree in architecture at Princeton University in 2006 and her MArch from The University of Virginia in 2009. Lauren is a LEED Accredited Professional and a Licensed Architect (2013). She has practiced architecture at Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce Architects from 2009 to the present with a focus on sustainable design and adaptive reuse projects including the award-winning Bailey Power Plant in downtown Winston-Salem. She and her husband Danny have two children: Matthew and Christopher.

    Bio
     
    Terry earned his bachelor’s degree in music and his master’s degree in music education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has taught choral music for almost 30 years. Prior to his 2016 return to FCDS (Terry was originally hired by Headmaster Gordon Bingham), he taught choral music at R.J. Reynolds Arts Magnet High School since 1990. He developed an extracurricular show choir, a gospel choir, and a capella ensembles and served as stage and music director for the school’s musicals. Terry chaired the Performing Arts Department from 1993-1997 and from 2001-2007 and was a certified mentor teacher from 2005-2013. Terry is extremely active on the Winston-Salem music scene. He has been the church music director at Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church since 2014. He is a volunteer rehearsal accompanist for the Winston-Salem Mozart Club’s annual production of Handel’s Messiah and he has produced the A Capella Jam for Hope from 2005-2015 to raise funds for charities through music. During his career, Terry has received numerous accolades. He won the 2015 ECHO Award for community building from the Winston-Salem Foundation; the Yale University Distinguished Music Educator Award in 2009; and twice earned Teacher of the Year at Reynolds. He was also a finalist for the WSFCS Teacher of the Year Award.

    Leah earned her bachelor’s degree in public and urban affairs from Virginia Tech and her master’s degree in school counseling from UNC-Charlotte. Most recently, Leah served as Associate Director of College Counseling at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. There, she managed a caseload of 32 juniors and 32 seniors whom she advised, educated, and mentored throughout the college search and application process. This mentorship included self-reflection, values identification, application writing and strategies, organization, financial aid, and final college selection. Prior to Woodberry Forest, Leah worked at Davidson College for seven years, serving as Associate Dean of Admission and Director of the July Experience.

    RJ earned his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and his MFA in creative writing from George Mason University.

    Over the course of his 10-year career as a college counselor, educator, and writing specialist, he has engaged students in writing centers, college classrooms, public and independent high schools, and as an admissions essay specialist. Before coming to Forsyth Country Day School, RJ worked as Assistant Director of College Counseling at Greensboro Day School.

    He lives in Greensboro with his wife and two daughters.

    Originally from Silver Spring, Maryland, she lived in eastern North Carolina for 15 years prior to moving to Winston-Salem in 2008. She has a bachelor’s degree in middle school education with concentrations in math and science from Barton College. Before going back to school, she worked for First Citizens Bank in accounting. She and her husband, Keith, have two daughters.

    Born and raised in Beijing, China, Annie Jin graduated from Beijing Technology Institute with a master's degree in computer science. She remained at the university as an assistant teacher for four years before becoming a technical consultant for Hewlett Packard. However, her passion for being a teacher never died. After marrying her husband and moving to the United States, Annie held multiple positions as a private Chinese tutor before becoming the founding Mandarin Chinese teacher at FCDS in 2006. She designed and implemented all four levels of Chinese instruction. Annie has two children, Sarah and Alec.

    Originally from Raeford N.C., Nikole earned her bachelor’s degree in history from UNC-Pembroke and her master’s in cultural anthropology from NC State University. A seasoned educator with 12 years of experience, Nikole most recently served as a college advisor and senior events coordinator at Thales Academy in Rolesville, N.C. In this role, Nikole mentored seniors through the college admissions process, building strong relationships to help them discover who they are and what they want to do after graduation. Using this information, Nikole successfully connected her students with the best-fit colleges and careers for them. She and her husband Brey Cooper have two children, Rowan FCDS ’36 and River FCDS ’38.

    Bio
     
    A graduate of Williams College with a bachelor’s degree in studio art, John taught art at the Millbrook School in Millbrook, New York for five years. He taught courses ranging from beginning to Honors Photography, Advanced Drawing and Painting, Video, Art History, and Printmaking. In 2012, he earned his master’s degree in arts education from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and in 2014 he obtained his MFA in photography from California College of the Arts (CCA). Mr. Kildahl has taught and studied a broad spectrum of art, and he is passionate about helping students master new tools and techniques and to discover their artistic identities. He has presented on “Developing Independent Studio Thinking in an Honors Photography Class” at the National Art Educators Association Conference and most recently served as a teaching assistant at CCA.

    Originally from Austin, Texas, Tyler earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from the  University of Georgia. He taught for four years in independent schools in Texas and Georgia at both the high school and middle school levels. 
     
    Tyler is married to Laurel.

    After receiving his bachelor's degree in history from Mars Hill College in 1990, Joe was a teacher, coach, and dormitory head at Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Virginia from 1992-1996, and at the Orme School in Mayer, Arizona from 1996-1998. Joe has been with FCDS since 1998 as a teacher, and has coached cross country for seven years and track for three years. His family includes his wife Barbara, an FCDS alumna and former faculty member, have two sons, Will (FCDS 2021) and Sam (FCDS 2023).

    A native of Winston-Salem, Lisa has taught at Forsyth Country Day School since 2017. She taught in the Johnson Academic Center, and in 2018, helped re-establish the Latin program, which now has grown to include four levels of Latin. Before that, Lisa taught Latin for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County schools.   

    Lisa received her bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in creative writing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned her master’s in teaching with a concentration in secondary education from Salem College. Lisa is a member of the ACL (American Classical League), NCCA (North Carolina Classical Association), and is in the process of initiating a chapter of the NCJCL (North Carolina Junior Classical League) at FCDS.  

    Lisa and her husband have two children, Dafi (‘29) and Vasoula (‘31) who attend FCDS.

    Director of Educational Technology and Integration | Upper School Technology Teacher
    Bio
     
    A native of Winston-Salem, Mark graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. Mark was accepted on scholarship into the Miriam Cannon Hayes School of Music as a violist. He earned a bachelor's degree in music industry with a minor in business administration. He also pursued an undergraduate academic concentration in technology. His interest in technology led him to complete a master’s degree in industrial technology and he concurrently completed a graduate certificate in computer information systems from Appalachian's Walker College of Business. After several years in his family's electrical business, where he learned the technical and service side of the industrial manufacturing industry, Mark's passion for teaching led him back to Appalachian State University as an adjunct instructor in the University's Department of Technology where he continues to teach online courses in Technology and Web Design.  Currently Mark serves as the Academic Technology Coordinator for FCDS and is also a systems support analyst in the IT department. He also teaches AP Computer Science as well as various technology courses throughout the year. Most recently, Mark received a second master's degree in Executive Leadership from Gardner Webb. Mark is also the president of Elegant Ensembles, an entertainment services company that provides ensembles for weddings and special events throughout North Carolina. Mark's enjoyment of the viola also keeps him busy during the year performing as a substitute player with regional orchestras. Mark and his wife Robin have four children.

    Originally from Winston-Salem, Thomas earned his bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State and his master’s degree from Universidad de Alcala in Alcala de Henares, Spain. 
     
    Fluent in Spanish, Thomas lived, taught,and studied in Spain for four years and taught Spanish in New York City for eight years at the Hyde Leadership Charter School in the Bronx. 
     
    He is married to fellow FCDS teacher Grace Mason. 
     
    Fun fact: Thomas is a Fury alum who attended FCDS in seventh and eighth grade.

    Originally from Arras, France, Alice has a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in French teaching from Université d'Artois in Arras, France. She completed graduate coursework in teaching French as a Foreign Language at Université Stendhal, in Grenoble, France and is working on her graduate certification in teaching at UNC-Charlotte. 

    Alice worked in private and public French Immersion Elementary schools in Minnesota for seven  years, then taught French at the Lower, Middle, and Upper School level at the International School of Minnesota for five years and at Visitation School for two years. 

    Alice returns to France every year to visit her family.

    Ashton holds a bachelor’s degree in biology with a neuroscience minor from Gettysburg College and earned her Ph.D. in biology from Wake Forest University. She was a biology teaching assistant at WFU for three years and worked as a biology tutor. While earning her doctorate, Ashton developed a love for working with high school students. She served as an instructor of Project SEARCH Academy, a series of week-long biomedical science camps for rising ninth graders, for five years. There, she taught concepts including experimental design and critical thinking and managed labs designed to reinforce hypothesis-driven thinking. From 2010 to 2015, she volunteered at different visitation and science outreach programs for high school students, teaching microscopy skills to 6-9-year-olds at Kernersville Elementary School, serving as a Science Olympiad Judge at Atkins High School, teaching genetics concepts at Mt. Tabor High School, demonstrating lab techniques to Stokes County High School students, and demonstrating lab techniques to high school-aged students visiting Wake Forest. Ashton has also guest lectured at FCDS on bees and bee behavior, on which she is writing her doctoral dissertation. Ashton has served as an undergraduate research mentor at Wake Forest since 2011, helping undergraduate students work on independent research projects, teaching experimental design, lab techniques, and data analysis, and coaching and supporting these students through the completion of their projects. A member of the National Association of Biology Teachers, Ashton is married to Andy Bielsten, a Winston-Salem police officer. Their son Rhett is a student in the Early Advantage Program.

    Originally from the Florida panhandle, Dr. White earned her bachelor’s degree from Judson College, where she majored in biology and minored in chemistry and psychology. She earned her master’s degree in environmental analysis and management from Troy University and her doctorate in biology from Wake Forest University. Her graduate research focused on freshwater mussels and employed a variety of techniques, including water chemistry analyses, molecular assays, and field surveys.

    Dr. White is passionate about teaching and learning and has 15 years of experience as a science educator working with students of various ages. She was the program coordinator for Project SEARCH Academy, a five-day summer curriculum of inquiry-based labs promoting health careers for middle school and high school students. She taught chemistry online through Kaplan University and taught biology and anatomy and physiology at Guilford Technical Community College. Prior to joining the FCDS community, she taught biology, ecology, and invertebrate zoology at Guilford College for nine years. 

    Dr. White lives in Lewisville with her husband and son.

    Rachel earned her bachelor’s degree in Hispanic studies education from Eastern Carolina University and her master’s degree in Spanish language education from Middlebury College. Rachel has taught Spanish for six years at the high school level, most recently at Western Guilford High School, where she served as World Language Department Head for two years. She taught seven different Spanish classes ranging from Spanish I to AP Spanish Language & Culture. In addition to earning her master’s degree while studying at Middlebury in Madrid, Spain, Rachel took part in the ISEP Reciprocal Exchange at the Universidad de Malaga while earning her bachelor’s degree. She attended AP Spanish Language & Culture training in 2012 at the College of William and Mary and in 2013 at Wake Forest University. She is the author of the paper “El uso de palabras/expresiones malsonantes y eufemismos en el habla de Madrid”, which was published in the Gaceta hispanica de Madrid in 2010.
Our faculty knows our students’ names, supports them, encourages them, and is always pulling for them. In this way, our staff continually draws out the best in each and every child, showing them how to study, advocate for themselves, and develop a solid work ethic.

Forsyth Country Day School (FCDS) is a private, college preparatory, independent school for preschool through high school located in Lewisville, NC, just outside of Winston-Salem.
