Our Character Program


Children can thrive in a school community that values and embraces positive character development.
At FCDS, we believe we have an important role in shaping our students’ academic success as well as their strength of character. In order to have that impact, we must instill ethical values through an integrated curriculum, modeling, and intellectual discussion.

Our FCDS Character Program places emphasis on problem solving and social and emotional skill development. Our intention is to integrate valuable character traits into the total school environment. As a school, we are focusing on four character traits that we believe are personal qualities that build a foundation for success in life and work. These character traits will be embedded throughout the curriculum as a daily focus for both students and faculty.

Compassion  understanding and sharing another person’s experiences and emotions with the desire to help them
 
Integrity  choosing to do what is right, especially when it is difficult, even if no one is looking
 
Respect  recognizing the importance of people and property and treating them accordingly
 
Responsibility  acting honorably and holding oneself accountable for their actions and words
 
Our character program is tailored to each division so that the curriculum is age and developmentally appropriate. However, among all divisions, we are building on these character traits through intentional and direct instruction in the classrooms, school-wide activities, assemblies featuring leaders within our community, an active partnership with parents, opportunities for our school community to participate in serving learning opportunities, intentional and informed staff development opportunities, our wall of Character Trees, and cross-divisional Buddy Days.

Buddy Days allow our eighth through twelfth graders to mentor our 4-year-olds through seventh graders. It is a valuable time to be together as a school community that everyone enjoys. We are cheering each other on through this Character Program and our “Character Trees” have been a way to showcase our students and faculty’s acts of character on and off campus as leaves are placed on our school tree mural anytime someone is seen doing an act of character on or off campus.

As a school community, we are pursuing compassion, integrity, respect, and responsibility because we believe character and academic excellence are the backbones of our school. We know that when our students leave our campus, they are going to make an impact that is lasting within our community and the world.
