FCDS Juniors Yasmin Horner and Sahar Sayess Receive Grant for Forsyth Backpack Program

Yasmin Horner, president of the FCDS Forsyth Backpack Program Club, and vice president Sahar Sayess interviewed for a grant through the Winston-Salem Foundation Youth Grantmakers in Action, competing with 12 other groups for grant money. The Forsyth Backpack Program Club was awarded almost a quarter of the Grantmakers’ total budget, receiving a grant of $1,500.

With the money, the club plans to host a large packing event during the Middle School Day of Service where the entire FCDS seventh grade will be educated about local food insecurity and pack backpacks for local kids in need.

This club has already provided over 3,000 meals to insecure children in Forsyth County by organizing a 5K last fall.

“We are very pleased to be partnering with FCDS again,” says Carol Templeton President of Forsyth Backpack Program. “It is especially impressive when students see a need and take affirmative steps to execute a plan to meet that need. As a direct result of the efforts of the Forsyth Backpack Program Club, we will be packing 800 backpacks (3200 meals) which will go to Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School students identified by school personnel as being in need of food on the weekends. These meals will truly make a difference in the lives of the students we serve, and we hope will make a difference in the lives of the FCDS students who will be working together for the betterment of their community.”

Congratulations to Yasmin and Sahar for making a difference!
