Five Furies Move to State Finals in Math Competition

Sixteen Upper School students and eleven Middle School students competed in the Comprehensive and Level 1 (Algebra I) state contests, respectively, at Appalachian State University Math Contest on March 8. There were approximately 200 Level 1 (Algebra I) students from 23 schools and approximately 100 Comprehensive students from 11 schools from across the region.

Students enjoyed taking an exam, seeing the campus, participating in an actuarial science or infections disease activity, and even won freshly baked cookies during the awards ceremony.

Please congratulate the following students:

Level 1 (Algebra I) - Top 20 move on to State Finals at UNCG, 5/4
5th Place: Joshua Howard
10th Place: Sophie Scherer
11th Place: Saanvi Pawa (6-way tie)
17th Place: Jake Koonin (4-way tie)

Comprehensive - Top 8 move on to State Finals at NCSSM, 4/27
3rd Place: Kelly Chen

Additionally, FCDS won the Top Team (3A/4A) award in the Comprehensive division and placed 4th Team in the Level 1 division!

On March 7, three Upper School students, Kelly Chen, Mindy Li, and Kevin Wang competed in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). The AIME is a 15 question, 3-hour examination in which each answer is an integer number from 0 to 999. The students had scored in the top 5% of all participants on the AMC 12 exams and were invited to compete. This is an incredibly challenging math contest and we are so proud of Kelly, Mindy, and Kevin for qualifying and competing. We will have their results in the near future.

Thanks to Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Angell for all of their organization, support, and encouragement!
