FCDS Announces 2023 Commencement and Baccalaureate Speakers

FCDS is pleased to announce that Matt Peterson will speak at its 2023 Baccalaureate on June 1 and that Ross Wehner will speak at its 2023 Commencement on June 2.

Matt Peterson - Pastor of Awake Church and Founder of Hydrating Humanity

Matt Peterson, an FCDS parent and alumni parent, is the lead pastor of Awake Church in Winston-Salem and is the founder and director of Hydrating Humanity, a humanitarian organization that provides clean drinking water and sanitation education to people in East Africa.

Matt founded the organization after his work for the government took him to Tanzania, where he met a young Masai boy who asked him for water. Hydrating Humanity is dedicated to its mission of making a world a place where all people have access to clean drinking water and sanitation.

Originally from Oregon, Matt is married to Debbie, a former FCDS teacher. They have five sons: Josiah (FCDS ’14), Seth, Sam, John (FCDS ’20), and Andrew (FCDS ’23).

Ross Wehner, Founder of World Leadership School and Co-Founder of TeachUNITED

Ross began his career in journalism, working in Latin America during the 1990s. He reported on cholera outbreaks, terrorism, hyperinflation, and human rights abuses until he realized that he needed to stop reporting on problems and start trying to solve those problems.

After earning his master’s degree from the University of Virginia, Ross worked as a classroom teacher and wilderness educator before founding the World Leadership School in 2007. The school’s mission is to partner with K-12 schools to reimagine learning and create leaders for the next generation while infusing education with purpose. He lives in Colorado with his wife, Renee, and their two children, Francesca and Sebastian.
