FCDS Senior Wins Oratorical Contest

Congratulations to senior Keith Pemberton for winning the Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest!

Keith, FCDS’s SGA President, got involved in the competition through his church. He submitted an essay on the contest prompt, “Still Overcoming”, adapting the piece from an essay he wrote for English on the poem “When I Grow Up I Want to Be a Martyr” by Cortney Lamar Charleston.

Three finalists were chosen, and they spent a lot of time working together - which turned out to be Keith’s favorite part of the contest. “Over the month of December, we worked on our public speaking skills at a church in High Point,” he said. “Our speeches had to be five to seven minutes long, and ours all started at 11 minutes,” he said. “The collaborative environment helped to amplify my public speaking ability.”

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, about 650 people - including High Point area church members and leaders, business owners, the High Point City Council, and representatives from the NAACP - packed the Qubein Center at High Point University for the oratorical contest. “The event was wonderful,” said FCDS teacher and coach Marc Winbush.

Keith plans to continue honing his public speaking skills in college by getting involved in Toastmasters. “I encourage other students to go out and explore public speaking opportunities,” Keith said. “It's good to have [public-speaking skills] going into college, and it’s great to expand your skill set.”
