FCDS Finishes Spring Season with Two NCISAA State Champions, Three Runners-Up

Congratulations to our spring state champion teams - girls’ varsity soccer and boy’s varsity tennis! Kudos also go to our runner-up finishers: girls’ varsity lacrosse, boys’ varsity lacrosse, and boys’ varsity track and field.

Girls’ Soccer: State Champions
The girls’ soccer team finished the spring 2022 season undefeated, with a record of 17-0-1. The team won the PTAC Conference, outscoring opponents by 82 and only allowing eight goals against them all season!

In the championship game against Coastal Christian, the Furies won 5-0 with three goals from Hailey Jones and one each from Audrey McCann and Madeline Templeton, who also contributed two assists. Goalkeeper Giulia Duarte successfully defended the FCDS goal with seven saves.

“The varsity girls’ season was one for the books. Not only did this team go undefeated and win a state championship, but they showed everyone in the community what this program is about: sportsmanship, hard work, and classy soccer,” said Coach Julie McCann. “From the start, our mantra has been all about positivity, confidence, and having fun. No matter what role each player had on this team, everyone was all in for the long journey supporting one another and building each other up. I feel super lucky to be around a group of girls that not only set high standards for themselves but also know that supporting each other to reach those standards is just as important as the goals themselves!”

Boys’ Tennis: State Champions
Boys’ tennis ended a strong season with an impressive 16-3 record. The team won the PTAC Conference Championship in a match against Greensboro Day School and took the state title against Cape Fear Academy 5-2.

In the state championship, singles winners were Kendrick Lash (6-4)(6-2), Hank Williams (6-0)(6-1), and Ben Williams (6-3)(6-2). In doubles matches, Kendrick Lash/Hank Williams defeated their opponents (8-5) and Ben Williams/Max Trbonja won (8-1).

Girls’ Lacrosse: State Runner-Up
In its first state championship appearance in school history, the Furies narrowly lost to Davidson Day School 15-13 to finish as NCISAA runner-up. The following Furies contributed goals: Jessa Pacholke (1), Springer Hiatt (1), Victorya Hattley (2), Olivia McNatt (1), Caroline Sudler (2), and Hayden Head (6).

Springer, Caroline, and Hope Allen all provided one assist, while Hayden had two. Goalkeeper Kaci Smith had 10 saves.

Coach Jacob Todd noted the impressive season of firsts for the team “Following on the progress made last season, the FCDS girls’ lacrosse program reached new heights this spring. The Furies won their first NCISAA semi-final game, played in their first state championship, and finished as the runner-up in NCISAA Division II,” he said. “While their ultimate goal of winning a state championship was not realized, the Furies learned and improved a tremendous amount and will no doubt contend for the title again next year with this season’s experience to bring with them.”

Boys’ Lacrosse: State Runner-Up
The boys’ lacrosse were state runners-up, falling to Cape Fear Academy 9-7 in the championship game. Mason Ickes contributed one goal, while Andrew Peterson, Ian Kennedy, and Tommy Tessien each scored two. Berk Yalcinkaya, Ian, and Jay Dunnagan all provided an assist, with Tommy chipping in two. Goalkeepers Ryan Shugart and Ryan Moore each had five saves.

“The Fury Boys’ Lacrosse Team played a challenging schedule and at times displayed breathtaking, precise play on the field,” Coach Marc Winbush said. “The team was above the national average in scoring for eight of nine categories, invoking the ‘mercy rule’ of a running clock in 10 of 14 games. Congratulations on a great season, boys!”

Boys’ Track and Field: State Runner Up
The defending state champion boys’ track and field team finished second at the Division II state meet, and five individual athletes emerged as state champions.

Sam Scott, George Lawson, Harrison Tate, and James Synder took state honors in the 4 x 800 relay, and Aidan Baydush took the state title and broke the FCDS discus record.

Congratulations to all of our Fury spring athletes and coaches for all of their hard work!
