FCDS Announces Commencement, Baccalaureate Speakers

 
FCDS is pleased to announce that FCDS alumnus James E. Crowe, Jr. ’79, Director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center and professor of Pediatrics and Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University, will address the Class of 2021 at Commencement on June 4. Fellow Fury alumnus the Rev. Dixon Kinser ’92, Rector at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, will speak at the 2021 Baccalaureate service on June 3. 

James E. Crowe, Jr., M.D. - FCDS Class of ’79

Physician-scientist Dr. James E. Crowe, Jr., head of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center, earned the 2021 Southeastern Conference Faculty Achievement Award and was featured recently on 60 Minutes in a segment entitled “Stopping Pandemics Forever”. He is considered one of the world’s leading experts on pandemic prevention, and specifically on the molecular basis for human immunity to viruses including COVID-19, according to Vanderbilt University’s Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Susan R. Wente. “No other immunologist working today has had such a broad and lasting social impact,” she said. 

Dr. Crowe is a leader in the development of monoclonal antibodies, which target specific viruses like Marburg, Zika, HIV, dengue fever, influenza, and Ebola. Antibodies Dr. Crowe and his colleagues created at Vanderbilt University are being developed by AstraZeneca for the treatment of COVID-19. 

After graduating from Forsyth, Dr. Crowe earned his bachelor’s degree from Davidson College and his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he completed his residency in pediatrics. 

The Rev. D. Dixon Kinser - FCDS Class of ’92 

The 19th Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, FCDS alumnus the Rev. D. Dixon Kinser began serving in 2014. He attended the University of South Carolina, Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry, and the School of Theology at Sewanee. 

Prior to returning home to North Carolina, Rev. Kinser served parishes in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Nashville, Tennessee. He is currently completing his Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree in disability theology at Duke Divinity School.

Rev. Kinser and his wife Kristin have two children. He is a lover of all things pop culture, reading (from academic theology to graphic novels), and enjoys playing guitar.
