Spring Math Competition Highlights

The very busy math competition season has wrapped up with the state regional contests. Many of our Middle School and Upper School students enjoyed the experience of attending various math contests while visiting beautiful college campuses. They met and competed against students from across the region, attended math talks by college professors, and participated in math activities led by grad students (Did you know you can cut a star out of paper in one cut? Ask one of our students who attended the contest at App.) They worked diligently to prepare, working out contests from past years.

Here’s a recap of recent math competitions:

Appalachian State University & North Carolina A&T University
On March 21, nine Algebra I students competed in the Level 1 contest at Appalachian State University. On March 22, two Algebra students competed in the Level 1 contest at NC A&T. They all enjoyed the day’s activities, seeing the beautiful college campuses and had a great time competing. Congratulations to Leo Wang for placing in the top 10%!

Winston-Salem State University & Elon University
On March 22, six students competed at WSSU and on March 30, two students competed at Elon, all in the Comprehensive contest. All of the students had a wonderful time competing. Congratulations to Lucas Zhang and Joshua Howard for placing in the top 8% and qualifying for the state finals! Gary Yu will complete the team and they will compete on April 11 at North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

Lenoir-Rhyne University
On April 3, seven Geometry students competed in the Level 2 contest and eight Algebra II students competed in the Level 3 contest at Lenoir-Rhyne University. In addition to sitting for the exam, students enjoyed attending a math talk about magic and mathematics. Congratulations to the Level 2 students for placing 2nd place team! Congratulations to the Level 3 students for placing 3rd place team! Special recognition goes to Joshua Howard, Saanvi Pawa, and Max Drucker for placing in the top 10% of all participants. They have qualified for the state finals in their respective levels and will compete at UNC Greensboro on May 2.

Congratulations to all our students for all their efforts! Special thank you to their coach, Mrs. Charlotte Phillips!
