Tran/Morgan Mayson 8-1 Record: FCDS 3-4 Recap: Varsity Girls Tennis Team Wins Terrific Match Today’s match started without the services of injured Team Co-captain Halle Kincaid at #2 singles causing a big shift up in the lineup for the whole group. The response from our players to this shift was awesome as each player put everything they had into their individual matches as well as the Doubles matches to achieve a 9-0 victory. The match started with Doubles first and at #1 doubles Maddie Smith and Ashley Parsons won 8-5 in a very tight contest. Each team on this court traded games until the score was 5-4 when our Fury girls cut down on errors and out-hustled Westchester’s pair to pull out the win. Maddie ran down some apparent winners and Ashley’s lobs found their range in this match. Mary Brooks Hall and Erika Choopani played an excellent match at #2 doubles as they controlled the tempo of their contest from start to finish to record an 8-0 victory. Yu Otaki teamed up with Ashley Bean at #3 doubles. Yu used her speed and steady play while Ashley played with her usual toughness to win 8-1. In singles, #1 Maddie Smith played more of a cat and mouse soft game until the score was tied at 6-5. She then started to turn on her power game and closed out her match 7-5, 6-0. Mary Brooks Hall, our eighth grader, stepped up into the #2 singles position and played an outstanding match which featured many 30-ball rallies. Throughout the match Mary Brooks went for big first serves and finally found her range to close out the match with an 8-6 victory. This was the longest and last match of the night and the format was changed to an eight-game pro set. Ashley Parsons played an excellent match at #3 singles as she out-lasted her opponent 6-2, 6-2. Erika Choopani managed to tone down her power game and worked hard to control her contest with consistent ground strokes in the #4 singles match. Yu Otaki used her forehand well as she out lasted her opponent in rally after rally. Her movement was superb as she ran around her backhand to hit her more powerful forehand at will. Sarah Jin stepped up to the #6 position and played an outstanding match. She also moved with ease to run around her backhand to hit some excellent forehands. This was by far the best match experience for us this season. Our trainers did a great job of supporting the needs of our guests. Westchester’s girls gave their best efforts on every court. Both coaches left this match proud of the efforts of their teams. Go Furies!!!
