Furies fall in hard-fought first match vs. Cary Christian

Furies Take Three Singles in Loss To Cary Christian

The Fury Girls Tennis Team got off to a mixed start as we took victories at #1, #2 and #5 singles in a tough match against Cary Christian Academy. Captains Maddie Smith and Halle Kincaid dug deep into their inner strengths to pull off impressive victories. Maddie used her double-handed forehand to score several winners against a very steady opponent. Several of their points featured 14 ball rallies from baseline to baseline. Halle Kincaid did a fantastic job of keeping the ball in play at just the right moments of her match en route to a straight set victory. She worked hard from start to finish to control the tempo of a very entertaining match against a tough opponent.

Our other win came from the racket of #5 Sarah Jin as she worked from a set down to win the second set and then took control of the third set tie breaker. Sarah’s match was truly a dog-fight, much like Maddie’s and as I set here writing about it, I’m not sure she was playing tennis, I think she was playing the piano she loves so much on the tennis court. She truly went to that place in her inner self that says, enjoy- compete-complete this task.

“Promise” is the word I will use to describe the efforts of our young Furies at #3, #5 and #6 singles. This group of players, #3 Mary Brooks Hall, #4 Erika Choopani and #6 Avi Kurtz all showed they will be forces to be reckoned with as they gain more playing experience. Newcomer to tennis Ashley Bean played her first varsity match at #3 doubles with Erika Choopani and put in a simply outstanding effort. The other team really targeted her and she rose to the occasion getting ball after ball back.

Go Furies!!!
