Summer Enrichment

Summers at FCDS are a great time to explore, create, learn, and have fun. 
Whether your child enjoys making robots, cooking, crafting, playing sports or musical instruments, we have plenty of activities to let him or her discover new passions, create masterpieces, meet friends, and take learning to the next level.   • Junior Enrichment: Community Helpers - Rising K-3

    Join us as we explore the world beyond home to our community. We will have a wonderful time learning about all the exciting jobs that help our community run smoothly. The possibilities are endless when it comes to showing just how exciting, and important these jobs are! Students will also have opportunities to give back and serve their community as well. 
  • Serve and Be Served - Rising 3-9

    What a better way to kick off some summer fun than serving others while being served in return. We will start our summer off with a week called Serve and Be Served! Each morning we will begin with a service project that will benefit and impact the lives of others in our community. After game time and lunch we will then head out for an afternoon of fun as we hit the pool, catch a movie, tee up for some putt-putt action, knock down some pins at the bowling alley, or roll away at the skating rink. Lunch is included in the cost of camp each day.

  • Junior Enrichment: Super Scientist - Rising K-3

    Mixing Madness: There's a whole world of science to discover! Enter the world of science and engineering. We will be combining simple science and engineering to make incredible STEM activities that will provide tons of hands on learning and fun! Between creating slimy concoctions and seeing how far our Lego cars go, your child will not want to miss this week of awesome science exploration!
  • STEAM Camp and Retreat - Rising 3-9

    Join FCDS Summer Enrichment for a week of fantastic STEAM activities and field trips. Each morning the students will engage in science activities that involve technology, engineering, and math while also participating in an art class with lots of creative, hands on crafts. After lunch each day we will take off to explore our community on fun field trips and outings in the community.
  • FCDS Basketball Academy Hoop Camp - Rising 6-8

    Basketball is all about teamwork, coordination, and effort, but at the FCDS Basketball Academy, it is so much more than that. Through this age-old sport, your kids will learn to work together, push themselves, honor the game and their opponents, and develop healthy living habits. The camp will focus on fundamental skills (dribbling, shooting, defense, court awareness and passing) along with team play. Half day and full day camps are offered.

  • Junior Enrichment: Time Traveler - Rising K-3

    Climb in a time machine to explore the setting of some of your favorite Disney movies. Journey back in time to the places you’ve only seen on the big screen. Would you like to spend the day in London like Mary Poppins or in Greece with Hercules? Have you ever wondered what it was like in China during Mulan’s time? What about experiencing life in New Orleans like Tiana or in Polynesia, the setting of the movie Moana. Campers will create cool art projects, play games, read stories, and have fun while learning about history. Only time will tell what new adventures await this summer!
  • Baking with a Purpose - Rising 3-9

    Join the Summer Enrichment staff and campers for a week of baking with a purpose. We will spend the week learning to bake all kinds of goodies (and doing some eating too)! As the week comes to an end we will set up a bake sale for campers, students, and parents. All the money collected from the back sale will go to a special cause decided on by the baking class. Come bake with us this June and help put a smile on someone's face!
  • Boys' Basketball Camp - Rising 3-9

    Basketball is all about teamwork, coordination, and effort, but at the FCDS Basketball Academy and Head Coach Monty Gray, it is so much more than that. Through this age-old sport, your kids will learn to work together, push themselves, honor the game and their opponents, and develop healthy living habits. Be sure to bring a water bottle and appropriate sneakers for camp each day.
  • DIY Slime Makers Unite - Rising 3-9

    This summer enrichment is definitely for the messy minded. During this week of camp students will not only learn and try new recipes for slime making, but they will have opportunities to think outside the recipe and make new types of slime on their own!
  • Dolls Making from Around the World - Rising 3-9

    Doll making has been a craft practiced for millennia throughout the world. Using different fabrics, as well as paper, we will have fun learning how to make dolls from a variety of countries/cultures from around the world. We will also dress them in traditional outfits, while learning phrases and vocabulary in Spanish, German, and French. We will be able to physically describe them; name their outfits, and also identify the country and location on the globe that these dolls represent.
  • Fishing for Fun - Rising 3-9

    Grab a fishing pole and we'll head to the waterhole! This will be a week of fun fishing adventures. Campers along with their counselors and leaders will travel off campus to various local fishing holes and hope to make a big catch! Campers are encouraged to bring their own gear, but we do have poles for students to borrow.
  • Girls' Outdoor Adventure - Rising 3-9

    Make every day an adventure! Each day we will venture outside both on and off campus to enjoy ourselves in nature. Activities will include anything from physical activities like hiking to low key scavenger hunts and geocaching. In place of our campout this year we will be having 5 full days of outdoor adventure. Grab a friend and come along for an amazing week of exploration and adventure!
  • Land of Lego Creations - Rising 3-9

    Do you love to build with Legos? Does the idea of building with your friends and playing Lego video games sound appealing to you? Come and join us for hours of fun as we build both individual and team projects using all kinds of Legos. Your imagination and concentration will be challenged and, oh yeah, you'll have fun too!
  • Sports and Fitness - Rising 3-9

    Take time this week with personal trainer and coach Kristal Lollis to work on sport and fitness skills. Students will work on conditioning, stretching, and strength training skills. Work will be done in the FCDS gym, weight room, and athletic fields
  • World Languages, Cultures, Cuisines & Community Service - Rising 3-9

    Join FCDS Foreign Language teacher Maria Teresa Ortiz for World Languages, Cultures, and Cuisines. We will be learning to cook delicious, healthy, and simple treats from around the world, while practicing handy phrases in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian. The class will occasionally be spiced with Asian or Middle Eastern languages and hors d'oeuvres. We will prepare a treat and share it with a local soup kitchen that will brighten the day of local families and kids in need.
  • AirSoft - Rising 4-10

    Airsoft continues to be one of the fastest growing games in America. We will play airsoft on our very own campus under close supervision. Students will be grouped into appropriate age groups. Airsoft takes great skill to play well - campers can expect to learn to communicate under pressure, use teamwork to accomplish a goal, make quick decisions, and think strategically, all the while having a lot of fun! We will provide markers, ammo and trained Airsoft specialists.
  • Entrepreneuring - Rising 5-9

    Have you ever wanted to start your own company? Here's your chance! This 5-day "mini accelerator" gives young entrepreneurs a chance to acquire valuable skills by learning how to view problems as opportunities, working in teams to identify opportunities and come up with solutions, and ultimately trying to create value out of the solutions they identify. The camp concludes with a "pitch day" where the teams will pitch their ideas to an expert panel of entrepreneurs and investors. If you're ready for a fun, fast-paced week of "Entrepreneuring", come join us!
  • Outdoor Engineering - Rising 5-9

    Wondering whether engineers ever go outside? Applications of engineering are endless—especially when your office is outdoors. Examine fields of engineering applied outside, and apply the engineering design process to create a product that improves or restores a natural system in nature.
  • Habitudes: Youth Leadership Program - Rising 6-12

    Every student has leadership potential. This program helps develop young leaders in the community. It is also a prerequisite for those wishing to apply to be an FCDS Summer Enrichment counselor in 2019. Each student will receive their own book for the class. There will be class time learning about the characteristics of leadership, a time to help lead group games with the younger students, and opportunities to assist in other classes to put their leadership skills to good use. 
  • Robotics - Rising 9-12

    Want to explore the world of mobile robots? In this beginners workshop, you will learn to write programs in C. Using sensors and quadrature encoders, robots will be programmed to perform a myriad of tasks. Programming topics will include program organization, variables, looping, if statements, arrays, and functions. Lunch is included in the cost of camp.

  • Junior Enrichment: The Wonderful World of Eric Carle - Rising K-3

    Join us for summer fun by diving into the wonderful world of Eric Carle! This camp will focus on exploration through the popular author, Eric Carle, and his classic books allowing children to participate in various literacy, science, and math activities. The focus of this summer camp is to motivate children to read and dig deeper into literacy through read-alouds and science-based activities.
  • All Sports Camp - Rising 3-9

    Get active with a week of awesome activities and sports with your friends. FCDS Summer Enrichment coaches and leaders will give campers the opportunity to engage in and play a variety of different sports each day of the week. Campers will be both indoors and out so make sure to wear comfortable clothing and a water bottle. Grab a friend and come join the fun at FCDS this summer!
  • American Girl Doll and Me - Rising 3-9

    Have you ever been on an adventure with your American Girl doll? How about an adventure with your doll and your friends? Join us this summer and you will dive into the world of your favorite American Girl Doll as we have activities, crafts, games, and food. Be sure to bring your favorite American Girl doll so that she can enjoy the fun too! We'll discuss many topics such as, manners, being a good friend, and accepting others. We'll end the week with a tea party!

  • Girls' Lacrosse Camp - Rising 3-9

    Join coaches Lauren Donovan and Joel Zendel for a week of Girls’ Lacrosse Camp. Our goal is to improve personal and team skills, while still having fun! Younger players and beginners will learn /hone basic skills such as throwing and catching, ground balls, player positions, and team skills. Older, more experienced players will improve their skills through scrimmage, non-dominant hand practice, and defense and offense positioning.
  • Jewelry Making - Rising 3-9

    Beat the heat this summer and stay cool while designing and making your own jewelry! Learn beading techniques to make individual pieces or coordinating sets. We will use and create beads made of many different materials. Leave camp with your own collection of jewelry/gifts for those special people in your lives! Beads and materials will be provided, but campers are welcome to bring their own materials as well.
  • Minecraft Mania - Rising 3-9

    Do you love Minecraft? Could you imagine designing your own Minecraft fort in real life? Come engage yourself in virtual and real world Minecraft building both in and out of the classroom! If students have their own account, please bring the password and username information with you to camp so we can easily log on you on our computers. If you do not have an account, no problem, we can set you up on an iPad to join the fun!
  • Star Wars Jedi Training - Rising 3-9

    A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...kids had no Legos. Fortunately, that the case at the FCDS Summer Enrichment Camp! We will blast off into deep space for more fun than you can shake a lightsaber at. Young Jedis will start each day training and exercising with minds and bodies. We will build starships, make lightsabers, play galactic games, and so much more. Young Jedis...may the force be with you.
  • Ninja Warrior Fitness and Training - Rising 3-9

    Join FCDS Summer Enrichment coach Annette Kozlowski for a week of ninja warrior fitness and training. We will use obstacles around our campus as well as local parks to build strength, endurance, and confidence. This is a class that helps overcome physical obstacles while learning to have the mental strength to overcome life's obstacles as well. We will also take trips off campus to get strength and conditioning skills from area coaches and sports facilities.
  • Red Cross Babysitting Certification - Rising 6-12

    This course gives middle and high school students the knowledge, skills, and confidence to care for infants and school-age children. Whether it's bathing an infant, preparing a nutritious meal, or bandaging an injury, you will learn the tools and confidence that parents look for in a quality babysitter. The class combines video, hands-on skills training with our preschool students, and discussion for the most complete learning experience. All students will be trained through a Red Cross online class which is described as: This is an online course that will prepare students to be better babysitters. Topics include how to provide care for infants and children; how to stay safe; what to do in an emergency; how to choose age-appropriate activities; and how to recognize and handle a variety of behaviors. Students will also learn the basics of starting a babysitting business. The course consists of six interactive modules featuring video, activities, games and tools babysitters can use to build their knowledge and skills and manage their babysitting business. This course includes a final exam at the end and students who successfully complete the course will receive a printable certificate.
  • DC Electric Circuits - Rising 9-12

    Whether you are an aspiring electrical engineer or someone who wants a better understanding of one of the most useful topics in science, this hands-on workshop will introduce you to the science and basic math behind electricity. Through the understanding of the basic concepts of voltage, amperes, watts, and ohms, you will design, build, and troubleshoot circuits consisting of motors, sensors, switches, and relays using Digital Multimeters and solder. Lunch is included in the cost of camp.

  • Junior Enrichment: Keeping it Green - Rising K-3

    Join us as we explore our world and learn about ways to care about and protect our environment. We will have a wonderful time learning about different ways to take care of our earth and its many natural resources. Students will engage in books, videos, games, and lots of crafts that allow us to turn one man’s trash into another man’s treasure.
  • Musical Theater: The Little Mermaid - Rising 5-12

    Let’s go Under the Sea and bring one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories to the stage! Disney's The Little Mermaid is a beautiful story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World." Join us for this three-week session.
  • Build a Buddy or Create a Critter - Rising 3-9

    Come to FCDS Summer Enrichment to Build a Buddy or Create a Critter of your own this summer. To start the week students will travel to a local fabric store to pick out their very own fabric to use for their project. As the week progresses students will learn techniques for sewing their very own buddy to take home at the end of camp. There is no sewing experience required, just a creative mind ready to have fun!
  • Books and Bricks: Lego Meets Literature - Rising 3-9

    Bring your books to life with Lego creations! Imaginations will soar as campers combine their favorite story book with their love of Legos. Each day of camp will bring new and exciting adventures as we explore different themes such as building custom playgrounds, life on a farm, and custom car creations. This camp encourages your child’s interest in reading, while facilitating creative building and enhancing fine motor skills. Each daily theme will be reinforced Legos, books, crafts, music, iPads, and more. What could be better than combining your child’s love of reading and Legos into one seriously awesome camp?
  • Dodgeball - Rising 3-9

    Join the FCDS dodgeball king coach Mike Martin and come and see what all the rage is about in this classic game. Experience every kind of dodgeball game possible as we play, play, and play some more! If you want to be a dodgeball champion, grab a friend or two, and see if you have what it takes.
  • The Great Bake Off - Rising 3-9

    Put on your apron and join us for a week of baking adventures! Each day will be a new baking and decorating challenge at this camp. Campers will not only enjoy the fun of baking, but also the yummy treats along the way!
  • Horse Crazy - Rising 3-9

    Are you crazy about horses? Want to learn more and meet them up close? Join us for a week-long adventure. You can learn all about different breeds, grooming, care, and even spend one day on a horse! We will visit several local barns and get hands-on experience. Enjoy making new friends and crafts as well. Saddle up for a horse crazy kind of camp!
  • Nerf Wars - Rising 3-9

    Join FCDS teacher and coach Mike Martin for a week of awesome nerf wars. Students will engage in play all over campus both indoors and out. So, grab your nerf gun and come join the fun!
  • Soccer Camp - Rising 3-9

    FCDS Boys' and Girls' coaches invite you to join them for their annual soccer camp. The coaches will challenge students to improve in all skill areas: footwork, passing, scoring, moving without the ball, communication, and goalie work. Players will be grouped by ability and experience.
  • Woodworking - Rising 5-9

    Add your own creativity to plans, or design your own patterns, to construct a project in the wood shop this summer. Learn how to safely use both hand and power tools at your very own workbench and apply finishing techniques such as staining to give your designs an extra bit of flare.

  • Junior Enrichment: Beach Blast - Rising K-3

    Join us as take a virtual trip to the beach here at FCDS Summer Enrichment. We will have a wonderful time learning about all the ocean, its inhabitants, and life at the beach. The possibilities are endless when it comes to having fun in the sun and learning about our coast! Students will engage in books, videos, crafts, and a whole lot of FUN! 
  • Invent and Retreat with Mad Science - Rising 3-9

    This Mad Science camp is designed by You - the inventor! Each day, you'll be given a series of challenges that must be overcome using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and the most important tool of all-your imagination! With a little bit of ingenuity, you'll construct catapults, forts, erupt volcanoes on a shipwrecked island and even blast off into the science of the future! While Thomas Edison said invention is 10% inspiration & 90% perspiration, you'll find that this camp is 100% FUN! After we wrap up our inventing for the day we will have lunch on campus and then head out for an afternoon of fun activities and field trips.
  • Tennis Camp - Rising 3-9

    FCDS Varsity Tennis Coach Harold Moore invites you to join him for a fun week learning and reinforcing the principles of tennis. Forehands, backhands, serving, strategy, and partner play will be emphasized. Come and join us for a great week of fun and improvement! This is a co-ed sports camp welcoming all tennis players.
  • Electricity and Circuits - Rising 5-9

    This workshops offers a basic introduction to electricity, whether you are an aspiring young electrical engineer or just someone who wants to better understand one of the most useful topics in science. You will learn the basics of electricity along with the concepts and applications of voltage, current, resistance, and power. In the lab, groups will design and build low DC voltage circuits, and learn to use digital multi-meters to make measurements.
  • App Programming for Mobile Devices - Rising 9-12

    Come learn what it means to create an app for a mobile device using MIT's App Inventor software. In this workshop, you will experience what it's like to program for a tablet or smartphone operating system while learning some basics about logic, user interface design, persistent data, and more...all while accessing and using the various sensors on a mobile device including GPS, Bluetooth, touchscreen controls, accelerometer, gyroscope, and more. Lunch is included in the cost of camp.

  • Junior Enrichment: The Zany World of Dr. Seuss - Rising K-3

    Join us for summer fun by diving into the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss! This camp will focus on exploration through the popular author, Dr. Seuss, and his classic books allowing children to participate in various literacy, science, and math activities, along with fun and creative crafts. The focus of this summer camp is to motivate children to read and dig deeper into literacy through read-alouds and science-based activities.
  • Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate! Baking & Reading Camp - Rising 3-9

    Did I have you at chocolate? Would your child like to make delectable chocolate treats each day? Each day we’ll combine baking and reading activities for this camp. From reader’s theater to read alouds and paired readings, students will focus on the theme of chocolate. This camp also involves a special field trip to Black Mountain Chocolate in Winston Salem at the end of the week!
  • Engineering 101 - Rising 3-9

    Join FCDS scientists to engineer your creative mind and create amazing inventions. Come bring your tools as we step into a workshop of gadgets where you will create, and construct super structures and use your imagination to become inventors! We will dream up and experiment with many hands-on projects. Get ready to put your brains and hands to work as we explore and force our imaginations and creativity to collide.
  • Flag Football - Rising 3-9

    FCDS Flag Football is a great opportunity for athletes to learn the basics of football and to have fun doing so. Our coaching staff will focus each day on teaching a basic football skill (passing, throwing, catching, blocking, tackling, etc.) This camp is non-contact, and is designed for athletes to learn the basics of flag football, have fun, and be able to compete in a flag football format.
  • Horse Crazy - Rising 3-9

    Are you crazy about horses? Want to learn more and meet them up close? Join us for a week-long adventure. You can learn all about different breeds, grooming, care, and even spend one day on a horse! We will visit several local barns and get hands-on experience.     Are you ready to dig in? Get your clay and let's go! Students will work hand-in-hand with FCDS Art Teacher Karen Dalton to learn the hand building techniques of pinch, coil, and slab construction with clay. Our hands are the best tools for making things out of clay. All the projects will be glazed and fired to completion.
  • Sport and Fitness - Rising 3-9

    Take time this week with personal trainer and coach Kristal Lollis to work on sport and fitness skills. Students will work on conditioning, stretching, and strength training skills. Work will be done in the FCDS gym, weight room, and athletic fields. 
  • Robotics - Rising 5-9

    Want to explore the world of mobile robots? In this beginners workshop, you’ll learn to write programs to make a robot navigate courses and make decisions based on various types of sensors using the Lego EV3. Join this fun and interactive workshop!
  • Coding and Game Design - Rising 9-12

    Mobile Device apps, video games, small to large businesses—it's an ever changing world and one that is powered by electronics programmed by humans. Coding and App Development are predicted to be some of our most in demand skills as they grow by double digits over the next few years. If you have a dream of working for a Silicon Valley tech giant or want to create your own mobile game startup, your path to coding can begin here! Lunch is included in the cost of camp.

  • Junior Enrichment: All About Animals - Rising K-3

    There's a whole world of animals to discover this week in Junior Enrichment Camp! We will learn about many different animals, their characteristics, and about their habitats. We will use lots of books, find online research, watch videos, play many games, and create some amazing crafts!
  • Serve and Be Served II - Rising 3-9

    This is our second week of service at FCDS Summer Enrichment, and what a better way to wrap up the summer fun than serving others while being served in return. Each morning we will begin with a service project that will benefit and impact the lives of others in our community.   • College Essay Workshop - Rising 12

    During this week long 3-hour a day writing workshop, students will explore the Common Application prompts, brainstorm topics, consider sample student essays, generate rough drafts, peer edit, as well as receive individual feedback from one of our Upper School English teachers (Mrs. Harrington, Mrs. Holloway, Mrs. Harvey and Mrs. Sutton). Upon completion of the workshop, students will have a strong draft or final version of an admissions essay that can be used for the Common Application.

Before Care is offered from 7:30-9:00 a.m. each morning. After Care is available each afternoon from 3:00-5:45 p.m. 

Payment & Refund Information

  • Registering Campers

    All registrations and requests to be added to the waiting list for full camps are completed through the Active system. A confirmation is sent upon successful registration and payment. In the event that you do not receive a confirmation, please contact us by email to ensure that you are successfully registered. Requests to be added to the waiting list for a full camp require no deposit and are not binding. We will contact you in the event that a space becomes available in the camp you have requested, so that you may be added to the waiting list.
  • Deposits

    A non-refundable deposit of 50% of the amount due is payable upon registration through the Active system. Deposits may not be transferred to the accounts of other campers, including siblings
  • Payment

    Payment of registration fees may be made in full by debit or credit card at the time of registration through the Active system or in two installments. For those electing to pay in two installments, a 50% deposit is paid at registration and a second payment of the remaining balance due of 50% is automatically charged to your debit or credit card on May 15. After May 15, payment is due in full at the time of registration.
  • Refund Policy

    Registration fees are refundable, less the 50% deposit, when requested at least 14 days prior to a camp's start date. Camp registration fees become fully non-refundable 13 days from the camp’s start date. Requests to remove a camper from a camp for which he or she is registered and requests for refunds must be made in writing to be considered. Camp cancellations that are not submitted in writing within the timeframe explained above will not be considered. As a special exception, when two weeks’ notice of a cancellation is given and we are able to fill the spot in the canceled camp, we do allow full payments made to be transferred to the registration for another camp for the original camper on a space-available basis. Deposits and registration fees may not be transferred to the accounts of other campers, including siblings. No partial refunds are given for camper absences. Deposits and camp registration fees are fully refunded in the event that a camp has to be canceled by FCDS Summer Enrichment.
