FCDS Traditions Explained

List of 6 items.

  • What is Spirit Week?

We have a spirit week for each of our three seasons of sports: fall, winter, and spring. This is an opportunity for us to show our FCDS pride and support our many teams. The Student Government Association chooses themes for each day of the week and students typically dress up according to that theme as a part of a friendly competition. The week culminates in a pep rally at school with evening activities planned for families on the weekend (e.g., Tailgate or Pack the CAC).
  • What is Community Night?

Community Night is an opportunity for our FCDS parents and students (preschool-grade 12) to gather as a community and share a meal and engage in a variety of activities. When parents ask, How can I get involved? being a member of community nights is an easy and fun way to engage. Childcare is always offered (preschool-grade 8). An RSVP for childcare and/or dinner is required to adequately prepare for the evening. A full community night calendar can be found here.
  • Why the delayed start for Professional Days?

Consistent and ongoing opportunities for our teachers to collaborate allows us to grow in our profession and best meet the needs of all of our students. While we have a couple of professional development days planned through the school year for extended seminars, workshops, and coaching, the delayed starts are quick morning opportunities for our teachers to meet and discuss progress throughout the year. This is especially important with our new schedule changes. We want to make sure we’re providing consistent and quality instruction and maximizing the opportunities afforded to us by the new schedule. Students should plan to arrive at 10 a.m. on delayed start days.
  • What is Tailgate?

In short, this is a fun festival and party. Tailgate occurs on Friday evening at the end of our fall Spirit Week and takes over the Middle School carpool area with games, food, face painting, and other activities. We even have bounce houses set up in the Livengood! It’s another opportunity to meet other families (returning and new!), show our FCDS pride, and build community.
  • What is Buddy Day?

Buddy Day is a monthly opportunity for our students (preschool-grade 12) to share time together doing community-building activities associated with our core values (respect, responsibility, compassion, integrity, and curiosity). Buddy Day activities typically take place at the end of the day on Day 6.
  • What is Wonderful Wednesday?

Wonderful Wednesday occurs once a month and is a PA sponsored event. Parents collaborate to provide an amazing gift to our teachers - lunch! I cannot express how grateful we are for this monthly treat. I also understand that the gift of time will be extended to our middle school this year with volunteers to assist with supervising lunch so the teachers can meet as a division. We have so many wonderful teachers who are also coaches or are only with us part-time, so we often miss them during after-school faculty meetings. This gift of time allows us to meet as a full staff to better serve your children. Thank you!
