FCDS Student Wins One of Only Ten Youth Service Grants in U.S.

FCDS student Sarina Horner, 15, won a Youth Service Zone Grant through Youth Service America (YSA). Only 10 such federal grants were awarded nationally.

Sarina, who partnered with HandsOn NWNC and Wake Forest University, will explore how to increase youth volunteerism in Forsyth County. “I feel very honored that YSA chose to invest in Forsyth County because with it not only comes funding ($15,000 per year with the opportunity to renew for two more years), but a lot of resources on the national level to help us develop more opportunities for youth to volunteer in our region,” Sarina said.

Sarina will work to create a website and App to increase youth volunteerism. She says  “If it works well in Forsyth County, I would like to expand it to the state and national levels.”
