The FCDS Athletic Department’s mission is to provide athletic opportunities to challenge and develop Middle and Upper School students. As a co-curricular offering, athletics provides an environment for learning valuable life lessons in teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and sportsmanship. While academics are the priority for our students, athletics supports the mission of the school by facilitating the personal, social, moral, and physical development of our students.
FCDS offers myriad teams that participate in sports including football, baseball, basketball, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, swimming, volleyball, softball, track and field, cross country, tennis, and golf. More than 83 percent of FCDS students in grades six through 12 take part in at least one interscholastic sport. When numbers permit, the FCDS athletic department will offer Middle School, junior varsity, and varsity teams in each of our sports. There may be occasions when less than three teams are offered in a sport.
Philosophy by Level
At the varsity level, teams will be formed with the objective to put the best possible team on the field. Team member selection will be based on the skill and maturity of the student athlete. Varsity teams are formed with the purpose of competing at the highest level including for conference and state championships.
Junior varsity teams are an ideal building block for varsity program stability. Usually comprised of Middle School and younger high school students, the teams are somewhat selective and are geared toward player and program development.
Middle School teams are the foundation for sports at FCDS. Participation is the key ingredient and the love of the game and playing for FCDS is developed and nurtured here. The attempt will be made to ensure maximum participation consistent with available resources.
At all levels, playing time will be determined by the coaching staff.
