Instructor Mary Bailey Thomas

Mary received a bachelor's degree in art education from High Point University in 1977. She worked for 23 years in Davidson County Public Schools as a visual arts educator, and worked part-time at Davidson County Community College for seven years. Since 1988, Mary has studied during her summers at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts and Penland School of Crafts on scholarships, grants, and studio assistantships. She has served on the North Carolina Art Education Association's Board of Directors for three two-year terms, and received the NCAEA's State Youth Art Month Award. She was also recognized by the Council for Arts Education in Boston with two national commendations. Mary has presented more than 12 State Conference Workshops for Art Educators and has presented additional professional workshops for Davidson County and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Systems.

Mary's recent teaching credits include Salem College's January term photography classes since 2003, instructor of darkroom and photography classes & workshops at the Sawtooth Center for Visual Arts 1994 - present, and photo I, photo II, AP photography classes since 2003 and Summer Quest at FCDS for several summers.

Mary is an active artist in Winston-Salem's arts community. She was associated with Studios at 625 Trade in the Downtown Arts District from 2000 - 2005, and has recently moved back to 625 Studios, where she creates and exhibits her fine art photography, metals and mixed media artworks. She has artwork in collections at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Forsyth Medical Center, the Winston-Salem Journal, and High Point University, as well as numerous individual collections. She is a member of the Associated Artist Association of Winston-Salem and participates in exhibitions as well as in their Community Art Exhibitions throughout the Winston-Salem community. Mary has one grown daughter, Elizabeth, who is a freelance graphic designer in Richmond, Virginia.
