Due to the fact that students only meet for art ONE time per week, it is essential students make up the class they missed during tutorial. Tutorial is Monday through Thursday 3:15-4:00.

Important: when you view any project hand-outs online the web links in the hand-out are ACTIVE! Check them out!

Welcome to Middle School Art!

Pinwheels for Peace is the first project of the year. This project celebrates International Peace Day on September 21, 2008. FCDS will celebrate this day on Monday, September 22, 2008 by placing all completed pinwheels in front of the John Danforth Middle School. Check out the Pinwheels for Peace website!

Japanese Stab-Stitch sketchbooks are a must! All students are required to make and maintain a sketchbook in the art room to keep a visual record of all sketches and hand-outs throughout the year. Students will take their sketchbook home at the end of the school year. Students may bring items from home to decorate their sketchbook cover.

Community Service Project: A "once and done" (completed in one class period) bowl for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. Second Harvest Food Bank's Annual Empty Bowls fundraiser benefits the four Kids Cafe locations in Northwest North Carolina including Winston-Salem. Students will make a bowl and, after it is fired, glaze the bowl then donate it for the annual Empty Bowl fundraiser in the Spring of 2009.

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards is a "comprehensive course in enhancing creativity and confidence." According to Betty Edwards, " Often, in fact, people even feel that they shouldn't take a drawing course because they don't already know how to draw. This is like deciding that you shouldn't take a French class because you don't already speak French, or that you shouldn't sign up for a course in carpentry because you don't know how to build a house." Students will get to sample some of the techniques used to build more confidence in their ability to draw by completing five drawing exercises. I highly encourage parents and students to try the online exercises.
