This is the final edition of the Friday Update for the 2004-2005 school year. It has been my extreme pleasure to work alongside the wonderful people in the FCDS community. We are sad to leave the friends we have made, but trust that we will stay in touch. Our best to you all! Have a wonderful summer!

Update from the Health Room: May is National Melanoma and Skin Cancer detection month. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Approximately 65 percent of melanomas are caused by UV light. More than half of a person’s lifetime UV exposure occurs in childhood and adolescence because there are more  opportunities for exposure. People with a history of more than one blistering sunburn during childhood or adolescence are two times more likely to develop a melanoma than those who did not have the exposure. Studies support the need to protect children from the sun beginning at an early age. Please have your children wear sunscreen when out playing. It should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure. Make sure they have areas of shade to get relief from the heat, and have access to shirts and hats that provide sun protection.

Lost and Found: Clothing, shoes, books, sporting equipment, and lunch boxes have been turned in to the Lost and Found locations (LS-Across from Margaret Bennett's office, MS-Outside the MS Office, US-in the Upper School Office, the Johnson Academic Center Mailroom, and the Childress Activities Center). As of June 3, any unclaimed Lost and Found items will be donated to charity.

If you have any questions about Lost and Found, please contact Pat Schipke (LS and MS) or Ginger Thomas (US or Childress Activities Center/Tierney Gym). Thank You!

Fine Arts

Congratulations to Katie Browne and Max Friedman, National Silver Key Award Recipients of The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for 2005.

This year, there were 250,000 art writing entries submitted to the Scholastics Art and Writing Competition for judging. From a pool of nearly 20,000 national qualifiers, there were 765 artists and 411 writers selected for Gold and Silver Keys at the National Level. North Carolina received a total of 28 national awards this year, with two of those awards bestowed upon FCDS AP Photography students Katie Browne and Max Friedman.

Max and Katie's award-winning works were silver gelatin photographs that will be will be displayed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The opening reception for the National Student Art Exhibition will be on Friday, June 17, in Washington, D.C. The exhibition will be open to the public from June 18 through August 8, 2005. Both Katie and Max are seniors enrolled in the Visual Arts Department's, 2-D Design AP Photography Portfolio class.

More kudos to Katie Browne, who has been contracted by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, Inc., sponsors of The Scholastic Art Awards, to create an additional 20 silver gelatin prints of her National Silver Key Award winning photograph titled, "Children Dance in the Sand.” The Alliance has selected to use Katie's prints as a gift for each member of the Board of Directors. Katie will be working in the U/S photography darkroom with her instructor, Mary Bailey Thomas; to print the 20 commissioned pieces of artwork and receive her first commissioned art paycheck!

Cafeteria Appreciation Day: On Wednesday, May 18, the Freshman/Sophomore Girls' Service Club made FCDS history by holding the first annual Cafeteria Appreciation Day. This was truly a special treat for our wonderful friends at Flik, and was very much appreciated by all who received the surprise! Girls from the ninth and tenth grades hung posters and banners celebrating the newest Fury holiday, surprising the Flik employees by serving lunch for them! Also, the girls brought in food for the deserving workers to enjoy while relaxing during what is usually a stressful, busy time for them. After serving lunch, the GSC cleaned up the cafeteria and even took out the trash! Cafeteria Appreciation Day was a huge success for all involved, and the Girls' Service Club hopes that more of the school will take part in this exciting event in coming years. Thanks to all who helped out, and remember to thank the faithful Flik employees who feed our ravenous students every single day. (It's really hard work-just ask the GSC members)!

Sophomore Class Car Wash on Saturday, May 28 at Advance Auto Parts on Country Club Road 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Congratulations to FCDS Tenth Grader Carrie Worcester and to Eighth grade civics teacher Mr. Pat Rimron, who successfully participated in the Wake Forest Excellence Triathalon to prevent Domestic Violence on Saturday, May 21 at Tanglewood Park. Carrie won the 19-and-under age division with a time of 1 hour, 41 minutes and Mr. Rimron finished third in his age group.

Pre-Kindergarten: Pre-K is busy preparing for the end of the school year. The children made a special Father’s Day gift to take home. They have reviewed all the Letter People and numbers this week. The children had exciting visitors on Friday: the horses from Cash/Lovell stables made a special visit. The Pre-K teachers would like to thank you for sharing your child with us this year. It is so exciting to help them grow and learn!

Second Grade: Second graders had an exciting last full week of school! We finished reading Charlotte’s Web and watched the movie all together. Mr. Danforth came to talk to us about Andrew Boyce, an FCDS alumnus serving in Iraq, to whom we are sending supplies. A reporter from WFDD radio came to interview us and see the packages we’re mailing. Thank you to our parents once again for supporting this worthwhile project. Next Tuesday and Wednesday we will be celebrating Camp Junebug with crafts, music, and camp food. We look forward to seeing you at the Closing Ceremony on Thursday morning. Have a safe and restful summer!

Foreign Language

Pre K: We closed our year with a review of songs and dances that we learned throughout the year. It was fun to sing Colores” “Periquito” “Yo voy de verde, Tu vas de Azul and many others. And last but not least, we had a fruit tasting adventure and had our last opportunity to identify fruits by name, color, and shape. Felices vacaciones! (Have a wonderful vacation).

Kindergarten: We will be closing our year next Tuesday with a tropical fruit feast and a review of songs, poems, and expressions learned throughout the year. We will play the game El sombrero mágico (The magic hat) and as we pass the hat we will take out a piece of paper and perform what appears on the paper. See you on Tuesday. Nos vemos!!

First Grade: We enjoyed our last Spanish project! We took turns making our own “quesadilla”, and learned the following chant to help us remember how to make it: una tortilla, un poco de queso, doblar, que delicioso! (a tortilla, a bit of cheese, fold, delicious)! Disfruten el verano! (Enjoy the summer)

Second Grade: We closed the year completing our beautiful bird books! During the previous class, we took our binoculars and went bird watching on our school’s trail. We were able to see le cardinal rouge, (red cardinal) le geai bleu, (blue jay) and la corneille noire (black crow). We closed the year with a tic-tac-toe game to help us review phrases learned throughout the year.

Third Grade: Third graders organized their last fiesta complete with a piñata. We also had our last cooking experience: quesadillas con queso and took turns presenting a vignette from the Muzzy videos. Thus some acted out the role of la princesa Silvia, el rey, la reina, Corvax, Muzzy, and Juan. We had fun! Felices vacaciones! – May you all have joyful vacations!

Fourth Grade: We played word and sentence completion games and played the Muzzy tapes. We experimented, listening to them in English, then suddenly stopping the DVD and translating what we heard into French. We cooked crepes Suzettes and celebrated our passage to Middle School. A bientôt les Amis!

Music

Aloha

We are wrapping up the year. It has been a terrific year for singing! Each class displayed a love and joy for music. It will be exciting to see new Pre-K students come in next year. However, it will be sad for me to see the second graders move up to third grade! Thank you for sending your children to FCDS. It is an honor for me to work with each and every student. “Aloha” will be the song for the Pre-K – third graders to sing, saying goodbye to the fourth grade students as they move up to Middle School. Have a wonderful and safe summer. Aloha!

Science:

Well, this will be the last update for the year. It’s hard to believe it went so fast!

Pre-K: This week Ms. Holland’s class came to science for the last time this year. They have been wonderful little scientists and have really learned a lot! We finished up this week by learning a little about what kind of things make up our world. For example, we noted that some things around us are classified as solid objects, while other things around us are classified as liquid objects. We read a wonderful book which helped us practice our classification skills entitled Liquid or Solid? by Tobi Tobias. The children were asked to look at various pictures of everyday objects and try to put them in the appropriate category of either being a solid or a liquid. Some of the pictures were pretty tricky! Then, we really enjoyed one last experiment where we learned even more about different types of liquid matter. Through our experiment, we saw that some liquids are very thick and move very slowly, while other liquids seem to be thin and move very quickly. Some of the liquids we looked at included syrup, rubbing alcohol, oil, and water. We then wondered what would happen if we tried to combine some of the liquids together in a container. Would they mix? Would some liquids be heavier than others? After careful experimentation we saw that they would not mix, and the reason had to do with how heavy or dense the liquids were. Each time, no matter what order we poured the liquids into the container, they separated out and formed layers in the container in the exact same way. The water went to the bottom, while the oil floated on top of it. Cool! I have really enjoyed teaching Ms. Holland’s class this year and wish them all the best! Mrs. Shomaker Signing off!

Second Grade: I appreciate so many second graders coming to science team this week! They made up the majority by far! It makes me so happy that they love science and science team so much. I have loved teaching each and every one of them this year and will miss them all. Keep up the great work next year for Mrs. Chance

Third Grade: We just loved visiting the Brain Pop website this week as we looked at several of the “clips” on rocks and minerals. Children loved learning about the many different activities they can use on this wonderful website. In addition, we finished off the year with an all-time favorite edible experiment; we made Metamorphic Rock Pancakes! Ask your third grader to tell you about it. To all my third graders, A BIG THANKS for the great year. We’ve learned a lot and have many happy memories! Keep up the great work, scientists!

Fourth Grade: The children worked hard this week to finish up their owl pellet dissections. They sorted and classified their bones and then glued them onto a card. We have really enjoyed this activity. I hope you learned many wonderful things this year-I know I’ve loved every minute teaching all of you! Good luck in fifth grade.

I will miss the children and the many wonderful families of FCDS so much.

Thanks for three great years and all the support you’ve shown me!

Technology:

Pre K and Kindergarten Technology: This week will be our last computer class for this year. The girls and boys have had a wonderful year and have learned so many new and fun computer applications! Look for the "end of the year" newsletter that your child will be bringing home. There are many websites listed at the bottom of the newsletter that will allow you to access and download the programs that they have learned in class this year. Your children may enjoy playing with these programs on rainy summer days. This week in class the students were allowed to choose from the many fun games and programs they have enjoyed this year. They were able to choose software such as: Putt Putt, Freddi Fish and Jump Start as well as drawing applications such as Drawing for Children, Tux Paint and MS Paint. They were also able to play educational "freeware" such as Study Dog and Sebran's ABC's. I have enjoyed getting to know your children and I hope you all have a great summer! Mrs. Gebbia
