”The Walk to d’Feet ALS” (Lou Gehrig’s
disease) is coming up soon. As many of you know, Nancy Rea, an FCDS
mom, has had this debilitating and incurable disease for 11 years. Nancy has beaten the
odds of surviving, but not the disease. Even though Nancy has been robbed of any ability to
move, her mind and spirit are inspirational to all who know her.
We need your help to find a cure for ALS! Please support Nancy and all
the other people who are affected by this disease. Come walk with us to
“d’feet’ ALS on Sept. 11 at 9:00
a.m. at Ernie Shore Field in Winston-Salem.
If you would like to make a contribution to Nancy’s team, “Rea’s of Sunshine”, donations can be given to
Karen Dalton (LS Art) or sent to the Catfish Hunter Chapter, 1425-113 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh, NC 27610. Checks should be made
out to ALSA. It is Nancy’s
hope and dream that through your generosity, research may benefit others with
this incurable disease.

Pre-kindergarten: The first week of Pre-K has been terrific! We had so much fun
making new friends and playing with all the “new” toys in our
classrooms. Playground time has been the favorite. Our classes have
been to P.E. with Mrs. Chance and to music with Mrs. Frack. We are learning a
fun new Forsyth Country Day song. We have concentrated on learning class
routines and following directions. Our focus has been on making new
friends and that each one of us is SPECIAL!

Kindergarten: We have gotten off
to a great start in Kindergarten. Making new friends is fun! We
have been giving the Summer Olympics a lot of attention in our classrooms. We
are learning about Greece,
the athletes, and the Olympic symbols. We will be doing even more with
the Olympics during the next few weeks. The children have begun working
in the Cc letterbooks. Because C has a
circular shape, we have been finding out there are many different things you
can do with circles.

First Grade: What a fabulous week for first
grade! We’ve been busy getting to know each
other. We’re learning the rules that help our day run smoothly and
we have really enjoyed going to all our special-area classes. This is
going to be a great year!

Second
Grade: The second graders have
had a great start to the new school year! We have been reading The
One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo by Judy Blume
both silently and aloud. Math has involved reviewing our addition and
subtraction facts for homework, and in class we have practiced telling time
and reading a calendar. The children have adjusted beautifully to new
schedules and routines. Have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to
seeing our parents next Thursday at Open House!

Third Grade: We love getting to know your children and are looking forward to
meeting you at Open House to give you details about the upcoming year. Spiral
notebooks and/or workbooks will be coming home on Friday for you to review.
Please sign them on the last page of work. Also, please remember to clean out
the homework folder so we can start with a clean slate on Monday.

Art: The Lower
School art students
have been reviewing the four simple geometric shapes that make up almost
everything around us. The fourth grade students, along with the review,
are learning about different values in shading. They have learned that
varying the tones of light and dark in an object will cause it to appear
three-dimensional.
Music:

Pre-Kindergarten-Second Grade: What a great kick off to a new year! We had
fun getting to know one another in our music classes by singing the song
“Shake The Hand of the Friend Next To You.” It helped us
welcome our friends. We are also learning our new Lower School
theme song, “Forsyth Country Day.” You can visit the website
and hear it for yourself!
We’re going to have an exciting year singing songs, playing
instruments, and learning more and more about music!
Science:

Pre-K and Kindergarten: I look forward
to seeing these classes soon after they get acclimated to their homeroom
classes!

Second, Third, and Fourth Grades: This week we
were getting back into the swing of things in science. New students were
oriented, we all had a chance to meet some of the new classroom pets, we
organized our notebooks for the year, discussed some of the things we will be
learning in second, third, and fourth grade science, and played a fun
assigned seating game. Some of us enjoyed a science-room scavenger hunt and
we also began working on a project for open house. Wow, we were really
busy! Next week we will be discussing the scientific method and the
role it will play in the science classroom.
