Library/Technology

The ninth annual Storytelling Festival sponsored by the Williams
Library Discovery Center was a rousing success, with performances by
renowned artist Donald Davis, local storytellers, and even our very own Drama
Club! Lower School
students sat in the Big Top to hear stories from different lands - some
spooky, some funny – and then returned to hear Mr. Davis talk about his
childhood in the mountains of North
Carolina.
The Drama Club students entertained everyone at the Lower School Assembly
with a staged reading about the trickster Anansi.
The Middle School Round Robin changed a little bit as all of the students sat
in the Auditorium hearing great stories from Mrs. “Ghost” Funk,
Mr. “This is a true story” Martin, Mr. Pat “Oreo”
Rimron, and Mr. “Edelweiss” Jones. During the Middle School
Assembly the following day, Donald Davis encouraged students to think about
their own stories. Mr. Davis met with the Senior Seminar class before his
performance in front of the entire Upper
School and helped
students hone their autobiographies and trigger memories of events from their
pasts.
The Gallery was transformed into a down-home kitchen by Beth Beeler of the
Parents’ Association in honor of Mr. Davis’ mountain upbringing
for the Family Night Performance. A warm and receptive audience of adults and
kids enjoyed Mr. Davis’ stories and were able to purchase books and
tapes during the reception following. We wish to thank the Parents’
Association for its support of the Family Night Performance and the Krispy
Kreme Corporation for their sponsorship of Donald Davis’ performances.
Please go to the FCDS website at http://www.fcds.org/about/photo_gallery/2004-2005/storytellers/thumbnails.asp
to view photographs of all of the performances during the Storytelling
Festival!

Seventh Grade
Winter Book Drive for the children at the
Battered Women’s Shelter: Please bring in unwanted books
from your personal library. They should be in good repair and be appropriate
for children ages infant to teen. The books will be delivered to the shelter
for Battered Women in Winston-Salem.
The shelter likes to give children who leave their homes and belongings a
book to keep.
Drop off books in Mrs. Warren’s room from October 4 through October
20. Each student is encouraged to participate. Thanks!

Lower School

Mrs. Chance
would like to thank all of the Pre-K through second grade PE students for
doing such a nice job on Crop
Walk.
The Pre-K and Kindergarten students ran five laps each on the Childress
track to raise money and the first and second grades ran 10 laps. We will
present the check to the Crop Walk representative in Monday morning’s
LS assembly.

Pre-kindergarten: This week Pre-K met Ms. A-Achoo. The
students practiced the short vowel sound of A with our Ms. Achoo puppets, estimated apples and animal crackers, and
counted ants. We extended Storytelling Week with a visit to Kindergarten to
hear Ms. Kuhn tell stories. On Thursday, the Lewisville Fire Department made
a special visit to teach us about fire safety. The children loved learning
about being a fireman and even climbed inside the fire truck! Mrs.
Miller’s fourth grade Social Studies class came to Pre-K on Friday to
perform a puppet show about Native Americans. It’s been a busy week!

Kindergarten: In the Dd Letterbook we had our first word, dog. We also learned
the word odd. We learned its meaning and we learned that when two
“d’s” come together they make one
“d” sound. Now we have started the Ss Letterbook
and we will be learning more words such as sad and gas. The
children are so proud of themselves because they are sounding out the letters
to make words and they can spell these words. Hooray for kindergarten! They
are learning how to read.

First Grade: First-graders enjoyed
sharing about their activities over fall break. Now we’re back into the
routine of working hard and learning and are excited to have started our
second reading book. We’ve talked and written about the joys and
responsibilities of owning pets. In math, we are working on telling time,
symmetry, and addition facts.

Second Grade: The second-graders have been creating book
reports about the Cam Jansen books we have read. We are writing about the
plot problems and solutions and our favorite parts. We’re looking
forward to the Lower School Open House next week to show you all we have been
learning! Our social studies test on map reading, continents, and oceans will
be next Thursday, October 28.

Art: The students in Pre-Kindergarten have been busy learning about the
background, middle ground, and foreground in their artwork. They created
interesting paintings and were able to recognize and explain the different
areas in their own work.
Music:

Pre-K: “There’s A Spider On My Knee! The children loved
the huge black spider puppet we call “Wiggle.” She has eight legs
and she loves to jiggle, jive, and jump as she sings!

Kindergarten: “There were five little pumpkins sitting on the fence. Never
been there before, never been there since. One little pumpkin fell to the
ground and went “splat” and left four little pumpkins fat and
round-----” This song teaches subtraction skills.

First Grade: This week we sang the song “There’s An Alligator in the
Elevator.” We have also been working to illustrate a book of the song.
Then we had a blast singing the New Orleans Blues number “Elevator Operator!”

Second Grade: “Sarasponda” is a familiar
tune. The students took turns using the Orff
instruments as we sang the song. We used the giant bass xylophone, two step
bells, and a glockenspiel. Those not playing an instrument were the members
of the choir!
Science:

Pre-K: Ms. Holland’s
class came to science and we learned all about color. They enjoyed reading
the book, The Berenstain
Bears Learn about Colors, and then we discussed three important colors:
red, yellow, and blue. We learned that these three colors are called the
primary colors of paint, because these colors combine to make all other paint
colors. We then experimented by mixing our own colors. Children did a great
job on their first lab sheet of the year and also a good job of keeping a record
of the new colors they created.

Kindergarten: We finished our Air
Unit this week in Kindergarten science by experimenting with “air
rockets.” We made predictions about which size balloon would travel the
farthest distance. We tried to think about the size and shape of the
different balloons and how that would affect the amount of air inside. Ask
your Kindergartener which balloon “won” the race! Next week
we begin our investigation of magnets.

First Grade: This week we
dissected fruits and vegetables and extracted the seeds from them. Ask your
child if he or she remembers what dissect and extract mean. We
discovered that seeds come in many different sizes and shapes, and that you
can actually eat some seeds. Most of the students had never tried pomegranate
seeds! They were delicious. Mrs. Miller’s class had time to tape one
seed from each kind of fruit or vegetable onto their lab sheets.

Second Grade: We finished our
Dinosaur Unit this week in second grade. We loved watching the video, Eyewitness:
Dinosaurs, Puzzles fro the Past. Next week we will begin our Solar System
Unit.

Third Grade: On Monday we loved
going on a “sound safari!” Students enjoyed trying to observe
sound in various environments and then trying to classify these different sounds
into groups like: loud sounds, soft sounds, pleasant sounds, noise, and
musical sounds. We didn’t realize how many different sounds are always
around us! We also examined the different parts of the ear and loved looking
at and using a real stethoscope!
A few reminders for the third grade students: Monday, October 25 is “science
sock day,” so don’t forget to wear your colorful tie-dyed
socks that day! A review sheet was sent home in this week’s Wednesday
folder in preparation for the first quiz of the year. The quiz date is Friday,
November 12.

Fourth Grade: The children loved
going on their first field trip this year to SciWorks!
We learned all about the science of electricity as we participated in a
presentation given to us by one of the SciWorks teachers.
We also continued our own classroom investigations this week with electricity
as we tested for conductors and insulators. Ask your fourth grader what kinds
of objects conduct electricity well. A reminder to fourth grade students: a
review sheet was sent home in this week’s Wednesday folder in
preparation for the Electricity and Magnetism Unit test. The test date is Tuesday,
November 16.
FYI: Another science team meeting is scheduled
for Monday October 25. Permission slips were sent home today. Please
sign them and have your child return them to me on Monday. Looking forward to
seeing new friends and learning about Palm Pilots!
Technology

Pre-K & Kindergarten: This week in
Technology class, the children learned the basics of CD ROM handling. We talked
about how to handle CDs the proper way and to take care of them so they will
not scratch or break. We reviewed how to insert CDs and start games. The boys
and girls were able to pick a favorite game to play. They
chose between JumpStart Pre-K ,
JumpStart Kindergarten, Putt Putt,
and Freddi Fish. We also reviewed how to shut the games down properly and put
them away in their cases.
