International Student Host Families For Next Year Still Needed!

We continue to look for homes for three international students for next year. At this time, we are seeking homes for two boys (both from Germany) and one girl (currently from Australia but originally from Russia). All three of the students will be in the eleventh grade at FCDS next year. Over the last several years, our international student program has added much to our entire school community as well as to the lives of the students and host families who have participated in it directly. Your family does not need to be “a certain type” or need to have children of “a certain age” to be a great host family. Many different types of families have enjoyed the benefits of hosting an international student and we will gladly put you in touch with any of our current or former host families.

Please take the time to consider this valuable experience for your family. The cost of hosting a student in time, money, and other areas is minimal when compared to the value of the benefits received. Please contact our Director of International Studies, Wendy Quesnel, at 945-3151, x573 if you and your family are interested in taking advantage of this unique opportunity to enrich your lives or if you would like to learn more about the program.

Lost and Found: Clothing, shoes, books, sporting equipment, and lunch boxes have been turned in to the Lost and Found locations (LS-Across from Margaret Bennett's office, MS-Outside the MS Office, US-in the Upper School Office, the Johnson Academic Center Mailroom, and the Childress Activities Center). As of June 3, any unclaimed Lost and Found items will be donated to charity.

If you have any questions about Lost and Found, please contact Pat Schipke (LS and MS) or Ginger Thomas (US or Childress Activities Center/Tierney Gym). Thank You!

ATTENTION – Senior Parents and students

The College Counseling Office is in the process of collecting scholarship data to be printed in the graduation program. We include both scholarships offered and accepted as well as scholarships offered and not accepted! We need to know the exact name of the scholarship, college or university, corporation (or other entity) offering, and the amount granted. Please be sure that we have this information as we do not want to omit any or to have incorrect information in the program.

Thanks,

Pattie Stoltz,

Director of College Counseling

Lower School

First Grade: First grade continues to strive to learn as much as we can until June 2! This week we have been reading about frog and toad in our books. Please remember to read every night at home. It becomes more fun when it is part of your lifestyle! We are getting ready to sing at Salemtowne next week. The students have been having fun learning the songs and singing them with Mrs. Frack. We have all been looking forward to today – it’s May Day. Don’t forget Friday is a half day - rain or shine! We hope to see you there!

Second Grade: Second graders have been enjoying the book Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White in class and various take-home readers for homework. Next week the second graders will visit The Children’s Museum on Thursday, May 12 for a tour and program about the Underground Railroad. If you would like to chaperone, please contact your child’s grade mother. We have been busy making gifts for Mother’s Day, and we hope all of you enjoy the weekend with your families!

Art: The students in third grade have just begun a pastel study of the ocean. They students have learned how light affects the appearance of the water and how to illustrate movement in the waves. The contrasting blues and greens help to give their work an impression of depth. Their pastel paintings, when completed, will have lots of shells in the sand with water washing up with foam.

Music:

Pre-K: The children love the new song, “Swimming!” It is a movement song. Each time we sing it, we get faster and faster. We’re ready to jump in a pool by the time we’re done! This month we’ll also be using the book/song “Twist With A Burger!”

Kindergarten: Now that the children have completed the musical and singing for the nursing home, they have one more big event. They will be singing the “Goodbye Song,” “It’s Nice To Be Important,” and the “FCDS Song” for the graduating Seniors on Awards Day.

First Grade: We were praying for sunshine this Friday for May Day (and we got it—it just took a little while). On Monday, we will travel to Salemtowne to sing for the residents there. The children are prepared and excited to perform next week. They will be singing songs written from 1835 to the present!

Second Grade: The children learned a popular song of today. It took them about five minutes to have it down pat. It is the great tune, “Give Me the Beat Boys.” This group definitely loves to sing!

Science:

Pre-K: This week in Pre-K science, Mrs. Alley’s class enjoyed taking a nature walk. We discussed several important scientific words like “ecology,” and “environment,” before we headed outdoors, then we collected different nature items, observed our environment, and even listened to our surroundings to try and name as many things as we could in our environment. Several students even collected leaves, flowers, grass, and other samples and made beautiful collages from the objects they found. Some of us really enjoyed doing “leaf rubbing,” too!

Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten science, we continued to learn about the different systems and organs in the human body. We discussed the skeletal system today and added “bones” to our T-shirts. They are really looking great!

Second Grade: This week we discovered something else about density…we experimented with various liquids to see how their densities are different. We noticed that the dense liquids sank to the bottom, while those liquids that weren’t as dense rose to the top. Ask your second grader what kinds of liquids we used for our experiment!

Third Grade: We moved on to our investigation of the different rock types. This week it was all about igneous rocks. We learned that there are two kinds of igneous rocks: those formed intrusively, and those formed extrusively. We had fun illustrating a diagram of a volcano and observing the differences between some intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. Ask your third grader if he or she can remember some of the examples from class! Don’t forget, the field trip to Reed Gold Mine is next Friday (May 13). A permission slip and information letter was sent home in this week’s Wednesday folder. Please return it to your child’s homeroom teacher as soon as possible.

Fourth Grade: Students finished the rough drafts of their biome spreadsheets this week. Now, they are busy working on the final drafts during their computer time. Next week we will begin our investigation of food chains and webs in preparation for our upcoming owl pellet dissection. We can hardly wait!

FYI: The next science team meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 12.

Technology:

Pre-K Technology:

This week we listened to some circus poems from the book Circus, Circus: A Book of Poems. The children created a circus scene using the Drawing For Children program on their computers. We also finished our Mother’s Day gifts; the children were very creative with their designs! Hope everyone has a wonderful Mother’s Day!

Kindergarten Technology:

This week the children practiced typing “Words I Know using Microsoft Word. We reviewed font and font size and the children were to choose their favorite font and start typing their words from a word list provided. They enjoyed trying different font styles and sizes. We also completed our Mother’s Day gifts. The children worked hard creating special gifts for their Moms. Hope all have a wonderful Mother’s Day!
