Triad Race for the Cure-May 7, 2005

The Spaghetti Dinner to celebrate and kickoff the FCDS Team for the Race for the Cure scheduled for Friday, May 6 has been cancelled. Due to various conflicts, we do not have enough participation to continue planning for the dinner. Thanks to everyone who registered to be part of the FCDS team - I look forward to seeing you on Saturday, May 7 at the race. Information will come to you later regarding team T-shirts and packet pick-up. If you have any questions regarding the race, please feel free to contact me at 659-0040. Thanks again to you all! – Jean Waugh

Health Room Update: We have had numerous cases of Fifth disease in the Lower School. The symptoms include bright red cheeks and a lace-like rash on the extremities. Prior to the rash the child may have no symptoms or a slightly runny nose and sore throat. The rash may come and go for up to 5 weeks and is exacerbated by baths, exercise, and sun exposure. More than 50 percent of the children exposed will come down with the rash. The child is contagious during the week before the rash appears, and a child who has the rash does not need to stay home from school. ***Adults may develop pinkness of the cheeks but often exhibit symptoms of joint pain, especially in the knees. This pain may last from one to three months. Taking a non-prescription ibuprofen product usually relieves the symptoms. ***

The Health Room has also seen a significant increase in visits for allergy-related symptoms. The pollen has been heavy on campus. Children who need daily medication for spring allergies should be observed for signs of discomfort. Any child that requires medicine during school hours should bring it, labeled, to the Health Room for administration.

There has been a case of chicken pox in the Upper School this week. The incubation period is 14-21 days. Parents who know that their child has not had chicken pox or received the Varicella vaccine should monitor their child for the next few weeks. The signs to watch for are a fever followed by a rash of small red vesicles which become filled with clear fluid. Usually the person is contagious one day prior to the rash. The student must remain home for six days after the onset of the rash or until all the vesicles have crusted over. There is a drug called Acyclovir (Zovirax), which if started in the first 24-48 hours will decrease the number of eruptions and symptoms. Please contact the Health Room if your child develops chicken pox.

For questions or further information please contact the Health Room at ext. 329.

FCDS Speaker Series Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Winston-Salem Welcomes Clebe McClary April 18

The Middle and Upper Schools will hear from guest speaker Clebe McClary on Monday, April 18 in the Auditorium. A combat-wounded Vietnam veteran, Mr. McClary was awarded both the Silver Star and the Bronze Star for his bravery and concern for the men under his command. Hospitalized for two and half years after his return to the United States, Mr. McClary underwent 34 surgeries and countless hours of grueling physical therapy, but he never lost hope or stopped trying. Told he would never walk again, he since has run marathons and even holds treadmill test records that members of the Dallas Cowboys have never been able to beat!

Clebe McClary is living proof that whatever the obstacles, anything can be accomplished with faith, courage, and perseverance.

International Student Host Families For Next Year Still Needed!

We continue to look for homes for three international students for next year. At this time, we are seeking homes for two boys (both from Germany) and one girl (currently from Australia but originally from Russia). All three of the students will be in the eleventh grade at FCDS next year. Over the last several years, our international student program has added much to our entire school community as well as to the lives of the students and host families who have participated in it directly. Your family does not need to be “a certain type” or need to have children of “a certain age” to be a great host family. Many different types of families have enjoyed the benefits of hosting an international student and we will gladly put you in touch with any of our current or former host families.

Please take the time to consider this valuable experience for your family. The cost of hosting a student in time, money, and other areas is minimal when compared to the value of the benefits received. Please contact our Director of International Studies, Wendy Quesnel, at 945-3151, x573 if you and your family are interested in taking advantage of this unique opportunity to enrich your lives or if you would like to learn more about the program.

Lost and Found: Clothing, shoes, books, sporting equipment, and lunch boxes have been turned in to the Lost and Found locations (LS-Across from Margaret Bennett's office, MS-Outside the MS Office, US-in the Upper School Office, the Johnson Academic Center Mailroom, and the Childress Activities Center). As of June 3, any unclaimed Lost and Found items will be donated to charity.

If you have any questions about Lost and Found, please contact Pat Schipke (LS and MS) or Ginger Thomas (US or Childress Activities Center/Tierney Gym). Thank You!

Pre Kindergarten: Pre-K classes have been VERY busy rehearsing for their upcoming theatrical debut. All the “cows,” “pigs,” and “chickens” are getting ready to show their parents, grandparents, and friends how well they can sing and dance! Please be sure to join us for the guest performance on Tuesday, April 19 at 9:30 a.m. Mr. R is sharing in the excitement this week. He has brought along all his Rainbow Ribbons he won growing prize winning red roses. We have decorated red “Rs” with ribbons and rolling paint. We have learned some rhyming words and painted rainbows, drawn rockets, and run races. Next week we will have a new letter person as our guest, Ms. J and her Jingle, Jingle Jacket.

First Grade: First grade has had a very exciting couple of weeks! We went on a field trip to Mrs. Hanes Cookie Factory and saw how the cookies were all made by hand. We learned how to run a business and to follow our dreams to succeed. We also enjoyed tasting all the different flavors while we were there. On Friday, we were also very lucky to have a special guest speaker visit first grade. Mr. Austin Caviness from WXII news came to talk to us about the weather. He told us all about hurricanes, tornadoes, and storms. We also learned from him that working hard at school and following our dreams make it possible to achieve our goals and be whatever we want to be when we grow up! Thank you, Mr. Caviness!

Second Grade: The second graders went to Reynolda Gardens this week for a science field trip. Even though the weather became cool and wet, we still had fun and learned a lot about trees and flowers. In English, we are learning about the naming and telling parts of a sentence. We are studying the history of Williamsburg in social studies as we prepare for Colonial Day next Friday!

Third Grade: Thanks to all of you for making our State Fair so fantastic; we could not have done it without your assistance! The children worked hard and learned a lot about our country, and our students in third grade at FCDS will NOT be included in the large group of Americans who can’t even find the U. S. on a map, much less their state!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Art: The students in third grade are learning all about ceramics and different building techniques. Their project is to sculpt some type of food in detail. The students have been introduced to the work of pop artists Claes Oldenburg and Wayne Thiebaud for ideas. Their finished projects are sure to be pleasing to the eye!

Foreign Language:

Pre-Kindergarten: Qué delicioso! Having already learned about las frutas (fruits), we made a wonderful ensalada (salad) and learned the names of vegetables – verduras/vegetales. We also talked about their formas (shapes) and their colores (colors). We learned the song “Me gusta la ensalada.

Kindergarten: We were glad to meet again and celebrated this opportunity learning about what we are wearing today with the song “Tu vas de verde” (“You are wearing green”)J Yo tengo puesto una camisa blanca un pantalớn marrớn (white shirt, brown pants) or una falda floreada (floral skirt), blusa rosada y zapatos negros (pink blouse and black shoes). In order to help our brains retain this newly acquired vocabulary, we also played a memory game with large flash cards representing these garments. We had fun!!

First Grade: We had a guest from Paraguay/Argentina and had a chance to taste empanadas (meat pies); they were deliciosas; many of us shared: me gustan las empanadas, and a few of us said no me gustan las empanadas. We learned that Argentina is in South America and also that the gauchos (Argentinean cowboys) probably carried their empanadas on their long journeys through the pampas – Argentinean savannas.

Second Grade: We learned to inquire about and to express how we are feeling, naming common illnesses: “Qu’est-ce qui ne va pas?” (What’s the matter?); “J’ai mal à la tête” (I have a headache); “J’ai mal au ventre” (I have a stomach ache); “J’ai mal aux dents” (my teeth hurt); “J’ai mal au dos” (my back hurts). We took turns acting out doctor and patient to practice a dialogue. We also reviewed our “je porte un pantaloon gris…” (I am wearing…), garments vocabulary playing dodge ball.

Third Grade: We played “Pelota en el aire” (“don’t drop the ball”) while reviewing los días de la semana (the days of the week) and also it helped us memorize los meses del año y las estaciones (months of the year and seasons). We had fun keeping our eyes focused on the ball and our ears attentive to the month/day or season that the previous student called in order to say the following one. It was fun and challenging for our senses!

Fourth Grade:
We are committed to learn to talk about and describe our maisons (houses) in detail. As we are learning the new vocabulary: la chambre (bedroom), la salle de bain (bathroom); le salon (living room); la cuisine (kitchen) etc., we have started the ambitious project of constructing our maisons with boxes. Les maisons are beginning to take shape and they look great!!

Music:

Pre-K/Kindergarten: It’s musical time! I hope you remembered to send your child’s costume today for the dress rehearsal! The next two performances will be on Monday 18 (Lower School attends) and Tuesday 19 (Parents and friends attend.) All programs begin at 9:30 a.m. The children will be getting their costumes and make-up on in the classrooms beginning at 8:30 a.m. Come and enjoy the show!

First Grade: We are almost ready for our nursing home visit. The songs are sounding terrific. I think the teachers are planning a day when you, the parents, can come and hear these students perform these songs as well. Watch for a date!

Second Grade: Colonial Day is just around the corner. We are learning songs children from that time period would have sung. It is a lot of fun. This group, in particular, is doing remarkably well with the hand clapping/rhythm song.

Science:

Pre-K (April 4-8): Mrs. Alley’s class came to science this week. We enjoyed a fascinating book entitled Monarch Butterfly by Gail Gibbons. This story follows a Monarch butterfly through its entire metamorphosis from egg to adult. Children were introduced to such words as chrysalis, pupa, larva, metamorphosis, and migration. The students loved making their own butterflies using the scientific technique known as chromatography where they used filter paper, markers, and water to separate the colors to create beautiful patterns on their butterflies.

Pre-K (April 11-15): I was on a field trip this week with the second grade so I will see Ms. Holland’s class next week instead.

Kindergarten (April 4-8): Although we missed our regularly scheduled class this week due to conferences, we rearranged things a bit so that we could enjoy a presentation from one of our own FCDS teachers about the art of bee keeping instead. The children loved this presentation! A big thanks to Mrs. Boone (MS Language) for coming to talk to us. We loved seeing all of the wonderful bee-keeping attire and learning all about bees. This really enriched our learning about insects!

Kindergarten (April 11-15):  We finished up our Animal Unit this week in kindergarten science. We ended with an interesting discussion about animal adaptations, in particular, camouflage and hibernation. Next week we look forward to beginning our Human Body Unit and then beginning our T-shirts!If you have not sent your child’s T-shirt in to his or her homeroom teacher, please do so by Monday.

First Grade: As part of our reptile unit we discussed the characteristics of turtles, and the children observed and held two real turtles, the red-eared slider and the yellowbelly slider. I also had several different plastic turtles that were very realistic-looking and allowed the students to see the differences in marine and freshwater turtles, and land tortoises. We had a brief lesson on the difference between snakes and lizards and next week we will have a snake expert, Mr. Whitt, in our class. This is an exciting presentation, and I know all of the students will enjoy his slideshow and real specimens.

Second Grade (April 4-8): We missed each other this week with the conferences, but see you next week on our field trip. Don’t forget, parents, please sign and return the permission slip that was sent home this week so that your child can attend the trip to Reynolda Gardens with us. We are all anxiously awaiting this fun and educational day! Be sure to read the letter that was sent home for further details of our day. Also, we will need chaperones for this trip. Please let your child’s homeroom teacher know if you would like to help out.

Second Grade (April 11-15): We all loved the field trip to Reynolda Gardens this week! Children enjoyed the “Spring Gardens and Woodland Plants” guided presentation and were all very well behaved. They loved the nature walk and especially loved planting their very own plant to take home with them. Next week we will begin our final unit of the year; States of Matter.

Third Grade (April 11-15): Children did a fantastic job reviewing for their Simple Machines quiz on Monday and then today they took their quiz. These will be graded and returned next week. We all look forward to our last unit on rocks and minerals which we will begin next week, too.

Fourth Grade (April 4-8): Children have been working hard this week on their biome poster projects. This group project goes along with our Ecology Unit that we began last week. The projects look great so far. Be on the lookout for them to be on display in the glass cases in front of the library the week of April 18!

Fourth Grade (April 11-15): The children are still working hard to finish up their biome posters. These will be on display starting next week in the glass cases outside the library. Be on the lookout!

FYI (April 4-8): Another Science Team meeting is scheduled to occur tomorrow Thursday (April 14). We will be experimenting with color. Thanks to all those who signed up.

FYI (April 11-15): Another science team announcement was sent home this week in the Wednesday folder. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday (April 19). We will have a great time enjoying the outdoors when we have our “nature scavenger hunt!” Thanks to all of you that signed up. If your child has not participated in science team this year but would like to, please encourage him/her to sign up. There are only two meetings left this year!

Technology:

Pre-K: This week we only met with Mrs. Mahoney’s class due to play rehearsals. The children visited the website Littlefingers.com. This website has a selection of educational games to choose from such as: beginning sounds, counting, alphabet, size sorting, telling time, and a few others. We also talked about using the middle mouse button to scroll the screen up and down as well as using the mouse to move the scroll bar at the right side of the computer screen. Students were reminded to close the program by clicking the small “X” at the top right corner of their screen to return to the desktop. The Pre-K students are becoming very “tech-savvy” as our year winds down!

Drawing for Children

Kindergarten: This week the Kindergarten class was introduced to a new Paint program called “Drawing for Children”. This program is a drawing program that is especially suited for young children. There are familiar drawing options for drawing lines, circles, etc. but also many new and different ones to draw railroads, streets, bubbles, grass, etc. There are also many different types of pencils, stamps, clip arts, backgrounds, and special effects. The children were able to experiment with some of the new “tools” and create unique pictures. The “shift” key and “control” keys were also introduced to provide additional special effects in the drawing program.
