Mission, Program, and Traditions

It is the mission of the Williams Library Discovery Center to ensure that all members of the FCDS community are effective users of ideas and information. The library media program is a collaborative effort that is fully integrated into the school's curriculum and is central to the learning process. It ensures that the entire educational community effectively uses ideas and information, enabling each to be full, productive, and independent members of an educated society.

The Lower School Library is a place of learning and enjoyment for students JrPre-Kindergarten through fourth grade along with their teachers and families. It offers over 16, 000 volumes of books and other materials for use by the entire school community.

Curriculum

The Lower School Library offers a rich and integrated Information Literacy Skills curriculum. We provides literature enrichment and basic information skills for Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 1, including story time and discovering authors and illustrators. Grades 2-4 have further opportunities to become independent seekers of information through an integrated curriculum of classroom projects and information literacy skills. The emphasis on reading for pleasure throughout the grades encourages all students to take home as many books as they wish.  For detailed curriculum information, please follow the link below.

The Birthday Book Tradition

Begun in the early days of the school, the Birthday Book Tradition directly involves students and their families in the library program. A student is invited to celebrate his or her birthday by giving a book to the library. The student may choose the book he or she prefers from a new-book shelf, and a special nameplate is put in the book in his or her honor.

Adopt a Library Shelf

Second through fourth grade students can adopt their very own library shelf in the Lower School Library! Students are responsible for keeping their shelves neat and in the proper order for the entire year. When students choose to adopt a shelf, they have special nameplates posted on their shelves. This is a great way to help the Lower School Library AND build a sense of responsibility and understanding for how books are shelved in the library. Please contact Fontaine Gervasi if you know a student who’d like to participate. Find out more…

Share Your Collections

Students can now showcase their special collections in a beautiful glass display case in the Lower School Library. Each student’s collection will be on display for two weeks for all to see.

If you’d like to showcase your collection, please contact Fontaine Gervasi.
