Overview
Students in third grade meet once a week throughout the year. Using a variety of media in drawing and painting, students explore different ways of expression through visual art. They identify and discuss how art is or was used in events and celebrations from the past and present and in various cultures. The students research their heritage and create an “Ancestor Doll” that depicts the country from which their ancestors came. Each student shares art creations with the class.
The student will:
A. Compare and
contrast the use of art elements, with emphasis on color, form, and texture, in
the environment, their own artwork, and the artwork they are
studying.
B. Compare and
contrast two artsworks that are made using different media.
C. Create
artworks that reflect their study of a culture.
D. Create
artworks that demonstrate an understanding of depth.
E. Create
compositions that reflect a sense of unity and rhythm.
F. Identify
and discuss how art is or was used in events and celebrations from the past and
present and in various cultures.
G. Analyze the
elements an artist used to create a work of art.
H. Distinguish
between representational and nonrepresentational artworks.
I. Discuss
the importance of artists other than painters and sculptors.

using sequencing appropriate to the technique, including cleanup
procedures).
