2008 - 2009 Upper School Course of Instruction Booklet

The Quest for Excellence:  Curriculum Mapping

Curriculum mapping is “a tool for gathering data on what teachers are actually working on with their students through the course of the school year.”  Unlike curriculum guidelines “mapping displays the actual time it takes to implement curriculum depending on the pacing needs of students.”

Forsyth Country Day School started the first phase of the curriculum mapping process during the 2003-2004 school year.  During this phase, the FCDS teachers gathered the following key data:  essential questions (key concepts), skills (based on curriculum guides), and assessments (tests, products).  Once data collection was completed and the actual maps created, the second phase of the process (2007 – 2008) began.  During this time period the FCDS school community reviewed the maps and identified learning threads, both curricular and cross-curricular. During the 2008-2009 school year, the faculty will continue to revise and refine their maps as well as begin the process of identifying gaps, repetitions, areas for integration, timeliness and currency of the curriculum.
