FOR YOUR SAFETY---OSHA GUIDELINES REVIEW

If you must deal with a student or staff member who is bleeding:

  1. Always put on the disposable gloves provided to you. In addition, if you think blood might get on your skin elsewhere, or in your eyes, nose or mouth, get additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from the Health Room, Middle, or Upper School Office, Gym, Trainer’s Office, or Maintenance/Kitchen area. In addition, summon the School nurse, ext. 329, and call the EMS squad by dialing 9-911 in emergency situations.
  2. Dispose of additional PPE while still wearing gloves, then dispose of gloves by turning them inside-out. Dispose of all contaminated material in containers marked with the biohazard symbol which are located in the Health Room, Middle and Upper School Offices, Gym, and Trainer’s Office.
  3. Wash your hands with soap and water after removing your gloves. If other skin areas or mucous membranes are exposed, these should be washed or flushed with water immediately.
  4. Inform maintenance if clean-up or decontamination of floors, carpets or other surfaces is necessary. Do NOT clean up by yourself - special cleaning solutions are required.
  5. If an exposure has occurred, report the incident orally to the School Nurse and fill out a Post Exposure Evaluation and Follow-Up Form. Your exposure status will be evaluated as soon as possible, and you will be advised if further steps are necessary.
