Andy, a former FCDS student, earned a bachelor's degree with honors in biological sciences from North Carolina State University and a master's degree in education with certification in secondary biology from Wake Forest University, where he was a member of the Master Teacher Fellows program. He taught at the Downtown Middle School and at Mount Tabor High School, where he taught sciences, led professional development for the district’s science teachers and also served as assistant coach for the cross-country and track teams. He has also worked in the Department of Education at Wake Forest as a clinical faculty member. Andy is a National Board Certified Teacher, a former Teacher of the Year from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public schools, and an honoree of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. He was awarded the 2010 Green Advocate Award from the Triad Business Journal for his work in promoting environmental awareness at FCDS and in the local community. Andy teaches Upper School Science and heads FCDS's "Green Campus Initiative," a campus-wide program to promote environmental stewardship and improve the school’s operating efficiency. He serves on the NCAIS (North Carolina Association of Independent Schools) Executive Committee and the STEM Committee at the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce. Andy’s academic passion is pedagogical innovation that promotes skill development vital to success in the 21st century. This innovation was recognized by the National Association of Independent Schools in 2014 when he was recognized as an NAIS Teacher of the Future. Andy is also the head cross-country coach. His teams at FCDS have won conference and state championships and in 2012 he was awarded with FCDS’s Jim Tobias Award for Excellence in Coaching. Andy and his wife Meredith have two children: Anna and Caroline, both of whom attend FCDS.
