David was born in North Dakota, but grew up in Greensboro, N.C. He received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a master's degree in education from N.C. A & T State University. After college, he taught and coached for seven years at Durham Academy, Greensboro Day School, and Guilford College. He then spent 15 years in sales with Dillard Paper Company, where he received the National Sales Award in 1998. David and his wife Kelly have two children: daughter Lindsay teaches first grade at Belville Elementary in Brunswick County, and son Will attends UNC-Greensboro. In his spare time, David enjoys church activities and playing golf.
