Originally from Iowa, Noel attended Highland High School and was the first high school athlete to clear seven feet indoors in the high jump. He was elected into the Indiana Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1981. Noel received a bachelor's degree in physical education and health from Purdue University. While at Purdue, he won the Big Ten Medal of honor as the school's top male scholar-athlete, was named to the Reamer's Club Varsity Walk as the student-athlete who brought national attention to Purdue, and earned the Red Mackey Award for athletics and leadership. Noel was a two-time All-American in the high jump, and won four Big Ten titles in the same event. Noel has coached Track and Field in many assistant and head capacities, including at positions at Bloom Trail High School in Illinois, Purdue University, Ohio State University, and Wake Forest University. Noel and his wife Deb have two children, daughter Tara and son Monte.
